Palau will soon announce the formation of a 600,000 Sq. KM area shark sanctuary. Article here
That works out to 0.17% of the ocean being "protected". Of course, they have few resources to enforce that, but it is a start. Let's hope this area can be expanded as sharks don't know where the borders are.

Another positive step in the right direction! Thanks for the link, Simon.
We need someone to do a study that comes right out and puts the kibosh on the notion that shark fin soup is an aphrodisiac. That would halt much of the problem. Hey, maybe the Mythbusters will stamp this as "busted"!

Kudos to Palau... it was announced at the UN. Of course the biggest problem will be enforcement. I hope more divers will salute this move by traveling to that enchanted set of islands.

I prefer an all-natural substitute. You can find them almost everywhere you go. No prescriptions needed and socially acceptable if seen in public with them. They come in different sizes for your convenience. They are called women and work just dandy for me...Isn't Viagra a much cheaper alternative to a bowl of shark fin soup?

I like the sentiment, Simon! Even if we do spend an inordinate amount of time and money trying to fight that "all-natural" look!
