Saw the entire NatGeo program the other day. The way they explained it is that certain transient pods of Orca have learned the secret of flipping sharks over to put them into a catatonic state. Clever of them.....

That is some incredible video, do you think the people on the whale watching trip got their money's worth?

Each wreck has a tale to tell about its life and its demise.

If you are observant while diving in dark places listen to the account each has to tell, You cannot come away unaffected.

Remember, in the movie Jaws, Quint's boat was called the "Orca." It's no accident that the shark hunter's boat had the name of one of the very few things that threaten the Great White Shark.

makes me want to get the dry suit, take the training, and head to Norway for the orca diving in the fjords (supposedly not the mammal-eating pods)
No aquarium, no tank in a marine land, however spacious it may be, can begin to duplicate the conditions of the sea. And no dolphin who inhabits one of those aquariums or one of those marine lands can be considered normal.

I think the Orca is just about the coolest creature. Powerful enough to kill a white shark, labelled the greatest hunter of the sea, has a wise, matriarcal society, and has been documented to save humans shipwrecked at sea.

And incredibly beautiful on top of all that!

:thankyou:

Oh, and by the way - what Rick said - I knew that, too. Hey Rick, we can be trivia geeks together!! :-D I bet you would win, though. :-D

Another very informative video.Heres a question,I believe would be for DrBill.A interesting coinsedence of both the Stingray & the Shark are both sent into a relaxed state. Are there any other mammals that have this behavior? Also, I've had the beleif that porposes are defensive for humans against sharks myth or fact? I.e.They would ram the shark in your defense.

Sharks and rays are not mammals, orcas are. Are you asking if there are other animals that are subject to tonic immobility or other mammals that use this as a hunting technique?

Re: your second question, I can't speak to the veracity of these reports, but here are some examples:
