This method of faking where an email comes from is called "spoofing" and is used to pretend to be from a trustworthy source so you open it.
It should be obvious that SD does not dabble in these shady goods, so please do not go to any web links inside those spoofed emails. Doing so can seriously threaten your PC and privacy as web sites can install programs onto your PC without warning or your consent. Just delete these emails and forget them.
Things to look for:
- Foreign web links
- Links with IP addresses instead of names (http://209.46.197.32)
- Bad spelling and grammar
- If it looks too good to be true, it probably is.
One further note, if you get any spam email with an unsubscribe link, DO NOT click on it. Not only are you going to a web site that will infect your PC, you are also telling the spammers that your email address is active and it will result in even more spam. Again, delete it and forget it.
TIP: I maintain a second web email address for junk mail. If a web site forces me to supply an email to register I give them that one. Then I go in there, get the information I need and log out. They can spam that address all they want as it is not the one I use on a daily basis. I go in every month and delete everything in there. Once your address gets on a spam list it is not possible to remove it.
