So what is "like" all about? I always see this 'like' us link? What happens if I click on it? Does it show up on a list someplace on my fb page/account?

What happens when others click that they 'like' us?


Is there a corresponding "Don't Like" button?


In other words...what are the pros and cons of "LIKING"????

LIKE can have huge benefits for a business page. Anyone who clicks on LIKE for the SD.com FB page will then get any status update you put on your SD.com page show up in their personalized News Feed.

I have LIKED many businesses on FB, and enjoy their posts. It keeps them up front in my mind when I need their product or services. However, as the business you should post a status update (and be original, creative and not post the same thing over & over) at least a couple of times each week. Alternate between business offerings and just plain FUN STUFF, or polls/questions so those who have LIKED you can comment.

I recommend that you take a look at Rainbow Reef's FB page....Suzette does a great job keeping us interested in their dive op. I also recommend that you take a look at Scuba Diver Girls FB page....they are a club, but also a travel reseller. What you see on their Wall is a sequential list of status updates they posted, interspersed with what 'followers' have posted on their wall as inquiries. See all of the Comments people post in reply to their Status Updates. Both businesses have a huge following on FB.

The way you grow your FB presence is to have your own FB Friends LIKE you, then their friends will see that they like you and possibly check you out and LIKE you themselves, and it grows exponentially.

If you want to continue to grow your business, FB is a tool you cannot ignore.....it is that powerful. Sit down with someone who is FB savvy and get a tutorial so you can see first-hand how it can work for you.

I concur with what Tammy said, and no there isn't a don't like settings.

As far as security goes, you can set who gets to see your likes and not. It certainly does have an impact on what advertising shows up on your page too.

George so if the controls are weak you will get more advertising? Not sure I understand what in you mean in the last part of your post.

Ms. Erica is on a roll and is moving me...er...pushing me to get this FB stuff going. We even had someone at BTS feel sorry for us and send us a similar analysis about how to get going.

I'll feel so 'modern age' when I finally get the hang of this stuff! LOL! k

RE: the advertising aspect FB is designed to analyze all of my LIKES, and on the right side of my FB screen appears various ads or notices of businesses that are compatible with my LIKES. For instance, I may see an ad for dive travel, or an ad for dating a scuba diver, or an ad for new dive gear, etc. (I limited my reply here only to dive-related likes! LOL). I do not know if these are paid ads, or if they are FB business pages.....

I'm pretty sure it does seeings as how every time I log on I get an ad that says wanna date a diver? With a picture of two happy divers. BTW the only things I have liked are DIVE related. So basically they know I'm single and I like to dive and therefore they feel I will be sucked into clicking on the add.

With this said the verbiage on site will be important as it is indexed by google and we ARE NOT a dating site not do we want to be portrayed as one!

Well, we aren't thinking of paying for advertisement on facebook... yet. So we don't have to worry about that right now.

The google indexing is what we'll need to worry about. They base most searches on how often you use a word or phrase so we want to you use DIVE, diving, etc, often. We will likely NOT use the word dating or use it only once to mention we are not a dating site.

Google is pretty smart and they already know us well If you type single diver into Google WE are the first three Unpaid links that popup. That's what the gentleman at BTS was talking about when he said we have a good rating. Setting up a good facebook page will help us keep this rating as our name will be out on another Google indexed site (facebook).

WW, those 5 pics at the top (if we're thinking of the same thing) will change, based on who posts a picture of you and then TAGS you as being in that pic. I did not take - nor did I post - any of the pics showing at the top of my individual wall page at this moment.

There are FB add-ons that help you design certain things about your Wall Page, but I don't go there and can't help with that.

When I went to DAN's page they have 5 logo type pics across the top. Maybe its different for a business as they have tons of other pics in their gallery.

Its getting more understandable but still pretty confusing.

Now you know how some of our new members feel about SD......they've never used a forum before, so it's confusing to them. You just have a learning curve to work your way around.

FB is really simple once you play with it a while......and then Zuckerberg will change something on you!

Regarding the photos on DAN's page, those are called Profile pictures. They work much the same way as SD's profile pics, but you can store many pics in your profile pic folder and rotate them easily. It appears that the organization page is laid out different (compared to an individual's page), which is a good thing for the business as you can pick & choose what you want to display up there.
