California diving is beautiful but cold, we may need to "buddy up" to keep warm :teeth:
The Truth out of Santa Barbara to the Channel Islands is a good liveaboard. Did the Explorer out of Ventura also to the Channel Islands but that boat is a bit too cozy. I'm sure Dr. Bill and others can give you more ideas.

Caleefornia Memorial Day weekend. Sigh, I'll be diving in the Sea of Cortez.

The Truth and the other Truth Aquatics boats out of Santa Barbara are great bets. I like the Peace out of Ventura as well. There are several boats out of the Los Angeles and San Diego areas. You can learn more about them from the California Diving News web site.

Catalina that weekend would be a zoo... major weekend for the island so hotels and boats will undoubtedly be booked.

Another great site for checkin' around is http://www.ladiver.com/

Memorial Day the water will still be pretty cold. You'll get a few degrees of warmth by waiting 'til the summer. Regardless, at a minimum you'll be wearing a 7mm with a hood (maybe a hooded vest or a farmer john) and 5mm gloves.

Well, the water is too cold for me, but if you are near San Diego or LA, I might come for a shore party!

Because of the cold water, most dive trips are held to 2-3 days. Longer than 3 days and your fairly well drug out. Mid Sep to mid Oct are the best times, with bug season opening the first of Oct. Labor day would most likely be the best bet. From May on the weathers nice, except the LA area has it's June gloom, with a lot of overcast days. The summer water temps run from high 50's to mid 60's, with viz being about 20-30ft. Toward the end of Aug. the water temps start up, and will be from the mid 60's to low 70's, and the viz generally goes up to 30-45ft, with some days/areas runing up over 60ft viz. If you've never dove in kelp beds, and with sealions/seals, it's a real treat. Those furry critters are like underwater puppy dogs. If I'm home, and I can keep the doc's and scalpels way, I dive year round. :cool1: Here's a site that has most of the California dive boats listed. http://californiadiveboats.com/
You may not be able to smell the roses underwater, but you can sea horses.

Sorry to see so many votes against Calf waters, at least the warmer Southern Calf diving. I know that many, or most, from Texas east will not ever try diving there, and that's sad. Really neat diving, in kelp beds, with fishes and invertebrates no seen anywhere else. Totally different from the Caribbean. :o

I've tried the Channel Islands different ways. My least favorite was the day boat out of Long Beach - across to Catalina, make a few dives, and back, but it could have been the overfull boat I was on.

I tried Labor Day Weeekend staying at Avalon on Catalina, even though DrBill warned me that it'd be crowded. It may have been more crowded than he's used to, but not bad at all, once I had my hotel and ferry reservations. I went out with ScubaLuv day operator there at Avalon 2 days, 3 dives and meals each day, and it was a blast!

Last spring, I went out on a 3-day liveaboard over Memorial Day WE, and that was great, too. The bunk was a little tough, but everything else was super, diving different islands each day, wathcing seals, dolphins, eagels, pelicans, etc during the surface interval.

Water temps do run in the 60s at the surface, and the 50s at depth, so I shopped around for a cheap deal deals on 7 mil suits for only $67! http://store.triple-l.biz/ neop gloves, beanie, and booties. It was well worth it, and I never got cold, although some divers may need to take extra precautions.

Any chance you guys would do it...? :cool1:

You are all a bunch of warm-water pansies. :teeth:

If you don't dive California waters just because it's "cold," you are missing out on some of the most fantastic diving on the planet. Sure, it's not as comfortable as diving in the Caribbean -- you have to wear a thick wetsuit, you might get cold -- but that same cold water is what makes giant kelp get so giant. You haven't dived if you haven't swam through the golden majesty of a kelp forest. It's an amazing thing. The fish aren't as colorful here (except for the garibaldi), but in some ways the dives are a whole lot more interesting.

Now get your butts out here and stop making us Californians travel to Texas and elsewhere to meet all you Single Divers! :birthday:

:teeth: Oh no, does that mean there is something wrong with a native San Franciscan who's favorite dive location still isn't Monterey

But those neat little critters are slowly getting me hooked. :teeth:

The secret to the cold water is skip the boat diving, do shore diving with long swims, keeps you plenty warm :D
Any time spent in, on, around or underwater adds days to your life.

Hey! I resemble that remark! I prefer the title "80/80 diver". But because I am a robust Texan, I'm more accurately a "70/70 diver".
