My husband will be spending some time at Ft Pickett and I am thinking about taking a trip to spend time with him if possible. I am looking for information on the area and about diving Lake Rawlings. What are the water temps like in mid to late August and any other information some you may have.

Here's their website. Check out the FAQ for anticipated water temp, sounds like you'll definitely need a wetsuit once you hit the thermocline. I don't live in the area, maybe some of the DC members can help you out with personal experience. Have fun, dive safe.

Thanks I guess I glossed over the temps when I looked before. It isn't a definite trip but something I am looking into. It will depend on where the husband gets stuck staying. If he is in barracks or has a roommate that complicates the visit.

Hi Jen. I was certified at Lake Rawlings and have been there a couple other times.
The temps I saw on their website are what I would have advised. It's good that they show top and bottom temps, in the middle of summer the bottom is full 5ml, hood and gloves territory. There are a couple of things to see such as a school bus and a helicopter. There are some really large bass and some bluegill to keep you company. Mostly a place to get certified. They do have camp sites and people around here make a weekend of it. There is also a motel in town that also gets a lot of divers staying.

The Nottaway motel is also another option if your staying the weekend there. It's not much, but its ok.

Thank you. I would be traveling with kids, so it really is up in the air if this works out but it looks like a nice lake and that it would be good for some skill practice and maybe a class. The biggest problem would be needing to rent a wetsuit and finding my gloves. I hate renting suits but I only have a 3mm, since I prefer warm water and a new wet suit would need to wait a bit and I would need to know it would be used more than once or twice.
