Hmm...since you are both beginners and training, there'd likely always be a DM/Instructor with you you could ask about nitrox/vs air.

However, given your experience level - similar to mine by the way - you are probably not gonna have enough bottom time or dive profiles to make a massive noticable difference in air vs nitrox. Plus, you are probably not gonna be making so many dives with such short surface intervals that it would be an issue either. Still, diving on nitrox is imho way more comfortable than on air - for me the exhaustion factor after multiple dives a day is very much reduced...

As for switching - well, it'd be a pain to have to change your computer all the time.

There is no reason why you can't dive with her while on NITROX. With NITROX you can't go as deep as with air, but she is taking her OW course so you won't have that problem. NITROX reduces the amount of your Nitrogen intake and increases your o2 intake, therefore the added o2 helps your body off gas the Nitrogen, this can help increase your bottom time or decrease your surface interval. It is good to use NITROX if you are planning to do multiple dives in one day, or just like Tabeak said, it can help prevent you from being exhausted. There are a lot of folks who use NITROX when they perform multiple dives, not to extend bottom time, or to shorten surface interval, but to decrease the chances of Decompression Sickness.

Even if you dive only 1 tank, you can usually tell the difference between how you feel on regular air compared to have used NITROX. The NITROX course can be taken with just theory or some LDS' include dives with it as well. You could take the NITROX with your friend if you prefer to do the dives, or you could even do it back to back with your AOW class. Always be sure to check with the LDS for time availability.
