Those ascent balls (what was their name?) came in two styles. One color ascended at 60fpm in sea water and the other color was for fresh water. I never saw them anywhere except in a dive shop. Did they sell at all?

Would you believe I found the name after doing a search for "ascent rate balls?" They were called Buoyancy Balls and appeared in a San Diego diving website paying hommage to "Weird Gear." :o

Interesting site. I actually have an Aqua vox someone gave me about 17 or 18 years ago. I've never tried it.
No single raindrop believes it is responsible for the flood.

My friend Ed Jewell took the photos for the Aqua Vox ad campaign that was run in dive mags. I've never tried it either. I think they had something in the 1960s or 1970s that was worn around the neck or carried and you could remove your regulator and yell into the air space allowing your buddy to try to make sense of your message. Speaking of voice communications underwater, I did like using the Ocean Reef communication system.

Too bad it is not DIR :lam:

Actually, I can usually understand most divers when they talk into their regulator. I just wish more could understand me.

OK, call me a techno-geek if you want, but I think the coolest thing to come along in a while is Oceanic's Integrated Head's Up Display Mask.

But seriously -- what are you going to do when your buddy kicks you in the face and you lose your mask? :cool1: Now you are in deep you know what!!! Hope you have a back up plan!

I will second the mp3 player as useless.

In general I would agree especially for recreational diving -- but for a long boring deco time it would help the time pass quicker.

I honestly have to say a couple of the most useless things I've taken diving would be some "buddy's" I've hooked up with. These are the one that drove me to dive solo. The worst one kept asking me for months after the dive if I would take him out again. This despite the fact that after the first, and last dive I told him I'd never dive with him again, and why, which he acknowleged as valid. He'd ask me to take him out, and I'd just stare at him opened mouthed, before saying NO, and you know why.
You may not be able to smell the roses underwater, but you can sea horses.

Too funny! But, didn't Darth Vader have a full face mask & a com unit? Maybe it wasn't the dark side? Maybe it was the FFM?

The Most stupid thing I have ever seen to date is a dive lite that attaches to your mask. so when you turn to your buddy to see if they're OK you blind them at the same time.
