Hey gang... what is the roll of forums or are they obsolete in today's world with so many social media options?
We'd love to hear your feedback so we an adapt and provide the kind of experience you want.

I think the forums are great for trip specific information and discussion, but social media like Facebook are great for encouraging general discussions, activity, and drawing people to the group in general. Just my 2 psi, that being said I just learned how to use both options so I may be a bad person to pitch in here LOL!

I see a niche for both. Some of our discussions go back a couple years. We revisit them and bring them back to the top of the pile as new people find them and new ideas are applied to older situations. Those threads I fear would get lost in the background noise of social media. I do like the way you can throw a question onto the face book page and direct the conversation back to the web page on topics that warrant it. The layout on the web page makes finding old trip reports and photo albums easier but I guess I'm just used to doing it that way. That's my 2psi

So does SD have a social media presence too? I'm in Afg again and haven't been around much.
Hey Vinny we do! We have both a page and a group. Please like our page HERE and check out the group HERE!
Still trying to figure out how to best use each entity on fb i.e. the page and the group. And of course the best way to promote our trips and fun diving stuff etc.
I guess we could do a lot of cross referencing.... meaning start a cool topic here and reference it in on FB and then post the link to THAT discussion back to the forums so all the relative discussion is not lost.
I also find that people do quicker replies on FB and more indepth replies in the forums. Not sure why...maybe most people check FB via their phones and most forum users still use a computer???

This is how I do it now that you mention it. for long posts I write it in Word so I can spell check it and make sure it makes sense when I post it.

personally I find the process of composing a post in the forums to much easier than on Facebook and, depending on the forum, I have less fear that others will flame. Also it is virtually impossible to find anything on Facebook a few days later. I'm just not wired that way.

I do check FB much more often as it really is optimized for mobile use and responses there are generally short and to the point. The forums I usually check on my computer as there the reading and responding is a little more involved. FB is also very much now orientated and if you miss it you may never see it, where the forums are a lot easier to trace back conversations and since they have so many sub forums, much easier to have coherent and germane conversations. At least for me.

This insight is good.... very good. As we evolve IN THE VERY NEAR FUTURE...we need to figure out the relationships between our forums, Facebook, and our new site.
I also like the filing cabinet feel to the forums but see the value of the 'instant gratification of facebook' in liking, saying hi, replying quickly to basically say 'me too' or 'I noticed you'. Its different and its fun and its not going anywhere so we need to figure out how people want to be reached so we do a better job of reaching them.
