Great question! I'm sure many have opinions, and I'm looking forward to hearing them!
From the get go, we're taught that diving is an equipment intensive sport. For some, collecting diving gear is another sport upon itself.
On its face, this seems like a simple question to answer, but really, I think the answer is that it depends.
When you buy used, you're buying equipment with a history that may or may not be revealed to you. That's not to say that it's a bad thing, but you are accepting the risk that whatever equipment you're buying may not have been cared for as well as one would like, not just from a servicing standpoint. If you are willing to accept that risk (and accepted risk may vary depending on the piece of equipment), then deals can be had.
I think one of the best things you can do when buying used gear is to make sure you have a dive shop that you trust who can inspect and service your investment (which is also true for buying equipment new too).
