The essential difference between Albums and Categories is that Albums are assigned and belong to specific members. No one but the Album Owner can upload images to a particular Album. Categories on the other hand are community based albums, any member can upload to a Category which allows images. Categories can be configured to allow either albums or images OR both OR Neither (keep reading). The Allow All option has proven a messy method to manage, so actual Trip or Event Categories (i.e. Dominica Week 1) should be set to Allow Image Uploads only.
Also, parent Categories like 2021 Trips and Activities should be set to allow neither image uploads or album creation aka locking down; this forces members to use only the categories that allow image uploads.

 

NOTE: This has not yet been tested with a regular member profile; The UPLOAD button works for me in parent Trips and Events Categories even though it is set to be Locked Down, but that may be because I am accessing it as an Admin. I will update this post after more testing.
I will take point on working back through parent Categories to lock them all down and force members to upload in authorized Categories only.
