I know. The island never really considered scuba for travel promotion. If they had, maybe they would have protected the reefs more. The guys I went with were friends of my boyfriend from Jamaica. They also harvested black coral to death.

I understand pollution is really bad there compared to other "dive" destinations...

Thanks for the help everybody.

I especially liked Terri's common sense approach - sounds like good policy on any dive.

Best Regards,
Tom

I have gotten the same reponse that are conflicting I am aow but do not have 10 dives under my skin and some say its fine and some say dont do it

here is my solution,

go diving in coz where they do drift diving and get a feel for that
then. (getting use to currents) then do some local diving and deep diving
then once you have got used to that. then go to the flower gardens.

there is a dive shop called sports divers(webster texas) that goes out there for just 12 hours instead of two -three days and take your instructor with you or ask if would be willing to go with you so you have someone familar with you instead of a total stranger on the boat. and go more than once
so you can get familar with the conditions then when your ready get on the fling or the spree and do the dive

Glad to see this topic resurrected!

My biggest problem with FG is #&*#)!!^ schedule. I was on for 3 trips last Feb-Apr - and EVERY one was cancelled.

Seriously, the boats decide on Friday if the weather will be good enough, and the winter months are notorious for being cancelled.

I'm on again for Feb 06, and hopefully will get me and my kids out there.

The summer months are reliable.
No aquarium, no tank in a marine land, however spacious it may be, can begin to duplicate the conditions of the sea. And no dolphin who inhabits one of those aquariums or one of those marine lands can be considered normal.

Well, having done the FG, and having 75 dives when I went, I would definitely say that I learned a lot on that trip. I was scared to death before almost every briefing. Especially the ones before we dove the platform. It was a great experience and I'm glad I did it with the number of dives that I had, and some advanced ones in NC, but I would recommend more.

I'm glad I had over 100 dives when I went last July with SD. We had dives where the current was running one way up top and different on the bottom. We had alot of surge on our platform dive; we were all doing our safety stop and keep getting pushed up and down between 5 and 10 feet

and, on one dive, my dive buddy and I missed the boat! We were under it at one point, but we never saw it from down below. If I had taken a heading when we were on the line, then we wouldn't have "missed the boat" on the way back.

We have 3 seats reserved on the 17-19 Feb trip. Let me know if you want to make it 4 - it's me and my two "kids" (28 & 22) so we could use an even number. I'm happy to dive with anyone. FWIW - one of my fellow DMs was seen hanging on the safety stop bar, sucking on the "tank of shame" the boat graciously provides.

Good news, the hammerheads are known to school there that time of year, bad news, it's one of the most frequently cancelled dates.
