Hello, Gang! It was, indeed, a MARVELous trip to Key Largo this past weekend. I finished my certification on Saturday, so I could dive on Sunday as a fully certified diver with Walter. :) We went down on Thursday and stayed at Ocean Pointe Suites, just off of mile marker 92.5 (Burton Rd), just a hop and a skip down the road from the Tavernier Marina. I met the infamous Capt. Gary and Capt. Jim from Conch Republic. I haven't been diving much (yet), but am in agreement with others on the boat who have....they are a very excellent operation! They were very safety conscious and gave terrific site briefings for each of the dives we went on.

We did two tank dives every morning on Fri, Sat, and Sun. Optional night dives and deeper dives to the Spiegel Grove and the Eagle later in the day (too deep for a newbie like me :( ). We were warned by those who had arrived earlier in the week that the waters were pretty choppy and the weather was pretty stormy. They were worried we might have to cancel a few of the scheduled dives that weekend. As beginner's luck would have it, it was incredibly beautiful and the calmest, clearest waters they had seen in a while. Water temps were between 86-88 degrees all the days we were there, and some did not even bother with a wetsuit! A slight current picked up on our last day's dives, but it was nice to have a little contrast for a newbie like me.

The highlight, of course, was my last day diving my first "officially certified" dives with Walter. Walter -- you are an AWESOME dive buddy! He saw things that I would have completely missed otherwise. I learned a lot about how to have fun and good diving techniques from my new dive buddy! Thanks, Walter! After we got back from the dive, we headed north to meet Marvel and her group for lunch, as she mentioned. Marvel -- it was terrific meeting you! Talk about a lady who is so fun to talk to and will give it to you straight! Can't wait to take you up on your offer and try some shore diving!

This weekend was an absolute blast! In and out of the water, we saw dolphins, sharks, eagle rays, eels, sea turtles, lobsters, a HUGE crab which Walter spotted (I don't think anyone else from the group saw that one -- good eye, Walter!), and all sorts of fish and coral. Even got stung on my descent by a jellyfish! :P I'm afraid I am spoiled now! Can't wait for the next trip! Thank Walter and Marvel!

...and Walter, catlike reflexes are a must for us gals when diving with sharks around! ;)

;) :hiya: :D :respect: :)

Looking for a place to get wet over Labor Day Weekend Walter. I believe you and your air band have a gig in Grenada, if I'm not mistaken. :banghead:

I promise I will get over there soon when you are there, I am very much looking forward to it.

Marvel, thanks so much for the great report! I have always loved diving the Spiegel Grove and have been so excited since learning it was uprighted from Dennis. This is the first report I've heard on the new dive, and I can't wait to get back down there and see it uprighted. Thanks again for your thorough report! :banghead:

Sound like y'all have a great time. :cheerleader:

Katie and Sandy, I think I'm crashing this trip with the two of you if you don't mind. Great company, good diving, and awesome conversation...who could resist? :teeth:

Que,

You can't crash their Labor Day trip (you'll be diving with me much farther south), but I'd love to dive with you on the next trip to Florida!
