Hi gang,
I dunno about the rest of you, but I happen to be a big college football
fan, and I'm excited that football season starts tonight!
I'm guessing that some of you participate in a football pool with your
coworkers or friends, and a buddy of mine had an idea that I thought was a
good one:
Rather than participating in a pool with your cronies, suggest to them
that each of them pledge something like $1 per point scored in the game of
your choosing to the American Red Cross for Katrina relief. And if you're not playing in an office pool, maybe you could start one, or just pick your favorite game and make a "bet" on your own!
Given that so many early season games are often times lopsided, and maybe
not even very entertaining, something like this could add some excitement
to watching the scoreboards and the knowledge that you and your buddies
would be doing something for a much needed cause.
A buck a point isn't all that much to us, but if enough people shifted
their pools, even for a little while, to this effort it could help out
some people that really need help.

I care very little for college football (but more than I do for pro ball), but I think this is a great idea David. Think of all the trivial things like entertainment and sports that we spend our money on, and how much more valuable it would be if directed towards a serious disaster like this one.
This would be more like the America I grew up in, instead of like the Roman Empire's focus on gladiatorial combat as it declined in power.

While I am a college football fan and likely will hole up at my favorite watering hole for the weekend slate of games. I have donated my first $$ while at the grocery store and will likely be going to buy items on the much needed list to drop off at a collection point around DFW. Needless to say, I like the idea.

At the FSU football game Monday night (GO NOLES!), there were lots of Red Cross volunteers taking donations. We also had a moment of silence for the victims as well as other efforts to call attention to the need for contributions and for prayers. The last I heard, over $250,000 was raised through FSU alone.

Given that my alma mater is the current #1 and two-time-defending national champion, I could be pretty broke before the season gets very far.
