On another topic, I'm going on a 5 days cruise on the west coast in January. One of the ports of call is Catalina Island. The cruise line has a dive excursion there. I'm planning on partaking this little adventure. Anyone have any words of wisom or can say what I may seeor what I can expect.

drbill is our expert on Catalina Island -- year round resident and daily diver. I'm sure he'll be along soon to help you out.

Right behind you, Caetllon!

Although the cruise line doesn't want me to tell you this, you can arrange for your own diving rather than have the cruise ship arrange it (and, I'm sure, tack on their percentage).

If you just want to dive, you can rent gear and tanks in town and walk out to our dive park. There you'll find a good shore dive with no additional costs. Depth ranges from surface to about 95 ft; habitats include rocky reef, boulder reef, kelp forest, sandy bottom, etc. There are a few small wrecks as well.

The dive boats most likely won't be going out if you come mid-week. On weekends you might catch one (they leave about 9:00 AM). You can rent gear at Scuba Luv (on Catalina St. 1/2 block up from the green pier) or Catalina Divers Supply (on the green pier). Both have web sites that you can search. I prefer Scuba Luv, but both are acceptable for renting gear.

PM me with any questions.

Heck, in January temperatures at the surface will be in the 50's! Last winter was a warm one... I never got a bottom temp lower than 56 degrees (unusual). Hopefully this winter will be similar, otherwise it could go to 48-52 bottom temp.

Definitely 7mm weather plus hooded vest, but these can be rented here.

You don't dive dry?

You don't dive dry?

Not until I dive Antarctica. Winter temps here are fine for a 7mm.

It is my "audience" (TV program, DVD's) and "readership" (newspaper column) who "dive dry," not I!

Thanks all, I am really looking forward to this dive. Since I can't yet talk my wife into getting certified, booking on my own seems a bit risky for 1 day. Do they have rent a buddy service..lol
Dr. thanks for the suggestions.

All the cruise ships do is book the dive with one of the two shops and rake in their percentage. You can get guided dives from Scuba Luv. Not sure if I'll be around here in January... too early to tell.

It must have been an unusually cold year when I dived with you, we had 51° in late September. It was great diving!

That was a chilly one, Walter. I don't think I've seen a bottom temperature that "exceeded" that one since. Unusual for September, but the vis was well worth it!

I had no complaints, great dives and great buddies. I have to get back to dive it again.

I must admit I was impressed with you. Not only were you not in a dry suit, you were in a shorty.

DRbill, The Cruise line is charging $100 for the tow hours excursion which includes the rental. How does that compare to the self booked tour, rembering I have to make it back to the Ship before they set sail with my wife.......Then Again..... :anna:

Not just any shortie... my 7mm custom M&B shortie!! Warm as toast. Of course I have good German legs so they generate a lot of heat and don't get cold easily.

It was good to see our other buddy Jennifer back on line recently.
