I'm a self taught swimmer and not very good at all.

Hear, hear! I fall into this category too. For years, it's what I used to convince myself not to dive, until somebody had the good sense to call me an idiot for letting that stand in the way. They were right; I was an idiot.

I'm a sinker, so no natural buoyancy to help me with the swim.

Here's where I have the advantage: I float like a cork bobber. Made the 10 minute survival tread a snap!

Cheers!

Jim

(Except for the comfortableness in the water part... knowing how to manouver from one end of the pool to the other...or from a boat to a drowning victim or from one end of the wreck to another is all that matters...HOW you look doing it is does not!

Don't listen to her Annasea! How you look doing it is the most important part!! :P

Well, you two pretty ladies will look good doing anything, but in this case actually making the distance is what counts.

Trace, you've lost me. What does getting in shape have to do with the question? I'm obviously missing something.

I went back & edited my post to quote Dr. Bill. I could have said, "I grew up swimming and took lessons (which I hated) so go figure that at 37 I'm still going to "swim lessons" by way of my masters team practice," but Bill's post made me think that a workout might be of slight interest as it is related to the topic to help anyone interested in getting back into the water. Many people think you have to swim straight for long distances to work out. Invariably, stroke technique becomes sloppy if you don't have the endurance. It's better to swim shorter distances with correct technique and build up. This is something coached swimmers know. I just thought it might be of use in this thread. If it should be moved the moderators can move it.

It's pretty much the same with any exercise...yoga, pilates, aerobics, step and running....all have form that is very important to yielding good results(even Jack Lalaine talked about posture and form).

and just a PS question...what is anyone that can't swim doing in the water???Im serious...I have always been adamant about that...with friends that had children to people that just want to play in the surf...if your near water YOU GOTTA KNOW HOW TO SWIM or your life is always in someone else's hands.
who's leading this parade anyway?

Trace you owed no explanation for your post. I indulged the question as I saw how it was related and why you posted it. At this time it will not be moved as I find it related to the original question.

And I too am one of those people who thought you had to swim straight for long distances to work out. I'm glad I now know that is not true. :lmao: And more importantly your workout routine is excellent! :banghead:

In fact I hope you know that we all REALLY appreciate your posts...they are helpful, insightful, positive, educational and much more than regurgitations of stuff written elsewhere...in fact many people follow your posts and actually click on the "find all posts by this member" in order to make sure they don't miss any of them! I know...they have pm'd telling me so! :)

Kamala,

Noone owes an explanation for their posts. OTOH, Trace's post seemed to be out of the blue and I asked for more information. Trace was gracious enough to respond.

Well, if you'd put a little extra insolation on that XXXXXXXX (compliment censored) body of yours, you might be able to float! Just teasing ya, Caetllonn. Don't change a thing... Mother Nature will eventually do that for all of us.
