this is very interesting to me i hand tighten my sec. stage hose out of habit but have never had to change anything on a dive. i do remember hearing storys about some oranizations or instructors tossing all your gear in the water and you have to dive down get your tank and reg put them to gether clear and then put the rest of your gear together under water i dont know the truth to this but maybe it can help with this topic

I don't recommend doing that - if you accidentally turn the second stage in the fitting while it is pressurized, then the little O-ring in there will get sliced, rendering that reg pretty much useless. If you are going to swap a second, then it's better to keep it tight and carry a small adjustable wrench to loosen it. Just make sure you shut it down and purge it before unscrewing the fitting.this is very interesting to me i hand tighten my sec. stage hose out of habit but have never had to change anything on a dive.
Some other good points were raised in this thread:
1. Make sure all stage/deco regs are interchangeable
2. A piston reg will survive a "hot swap" much better than a diaphragm reg
3. Feathering the valve is an option if you can't swap (for argon reg, etc)
4. Make sure you have a contingency plan for lost deco gas
Did I miss anything?
