I don't know the answers to that - but I always find the ocean blue wetsuits interesting....:wavey: I did see half the dive team was diving with inspiration rebreathers and HMS Explorer dive computers.

And about a minute before the end of the show last night, there was a quick shot of someone in a Drager Dolphin (lower-cost SCCR Nitrox rebreather, for the uninitiated, only good for 130' max).

...yeah, it was wierd, half the team used hi-tech gear (rebreathers/ etc.) the other half used the same gear configuration as they used in the 60's ( that triple manifold with 3 thin tanks) , no BCD's, not sure I even saw consoles/SPGs! as usual, the French do things their own way.

...that triple manifold supposedly streamlines their profile......but the manifold isn't the 'modern' isolation style, so there's no added safety factor to using 'their' manifold.....but again, back in the 60's this was a normal/accepted technology.

Karl

I haven't been watching. So, I can't say if it is the same setup that they used to use. Back then, it was three 30 cubic foot tanks with a manifold. The manifold had the valve for connecting the regulator above the right hand tank out of the three. There was no isolator. The case was designed to make the pack streamlined.

Next Ocean Adventures episode

Sharks: At Risk

Long feared as an object of terror, sharks are gaining a new reputation due to unprecedented observation – yet their numbers are quickly dwindling due to the actions of humans. To better understand shark behavior and the impact their reputation has had on their survival, Jean-Michel Cousteau’s team observes gray sharks in French Polynesia and great white sharks in South African – unprotected by a shark cage.

NOT FAIR :birthday: - not on the D/FW PBS (KERA) schedule..... I'm gonna turn in my Texas drivers license if they don't fix this soon!!!
No aquarium, no tank in a marine land, however spacious it may be, can begin to duplicate the conditions of the sea. And no dolphin who inhabits one of those aquariums or one of those marine lands can be considered normal.

It is soooo frustrating to have you guys talk about all this cool stuff and not be able to get my hands on it! :cheerleader:

It wasn't on the NYC TV schedule on 4/26 either. That sucks.

ALoha DG!

While the filming was going on, poor Cousteau was horrified to discover how much trash has accumulate on/around our nortwest islands. It's a terrible shame. I think his comments made it into the Hawaiian newspapers many, many times.
Thanks for bringing the final product to my attention! Can't wait to see the footage!

Not on my PBS stations either. However I did catch Kohler and Cunningham's special on the Doria, and then a cool show on Discovery Times about the finding of the Japanese Ghost Fleet of subs near Nagasaki. Very cool stuff.

OPB (our local PBS station) also only played the Voyage to Kure, parts 1 & 2. So I did some digging and AH-HA!!! The next two episodes will now air in July and then Fall for the last two. Here's the scoop:

Sharks at Risk Airs: July 12, 2006
The Gray Whale Obstacle Course Airs: July 19, 2006
American's Underwater Treasures Airs (Parts 1 & 2): Fall 2006

The next installment of Ocean Adventures will be shown 8PM Wednesday, July 12th on PBS (at least in Dallas, at a minimum :o ) Your local showing time may vary...

Just saw the teaser while watching another re-run of the program Nature: White Shark/Red Triangle.

Same thing for NYC PBS, but I didn't know about the Fall shows. I wonder why they split them up so much?
