Ok so have you ever planned a vacation knowing that you will be able to get some work done while you are at it? Or have you ever accepted a job/work knowing you could squeeze some vacation/DIVING into the package thereby stretching those oh so limited diving dollars and precious vacation days out?

In good times it seems that people aren't as worried about multi-tasking as much. And perhaps when times are tough...we try to maximize the value of every moment....

I do both. All the time. If I were not able to work while on vacation I wouldn't be able to go as much. And any time I travel for work I try to squeeze in whatever I can diving or vacation wise. With my job, and many jobs today, the distinction between work and play is a little more blurred. I'm just grateful for things like blackberries and wireless modems so that I can go on vacation and maintain things back at the office.

I'm doubly blessed in that She Who Must Be Obeyed tolerates my extended trips that wrap around a dive weekend and having a job with travel rules that allows weekend stays if the price of airfare home is more.

I NEVER work while on vaction. Got out of that bad habit when most of my work was classified and I couldn't bring it with me.

I do however, travel with dive gear if the Navy is sending me somewhere for work that might have some good diving.

Last year we had a project going in Japan and I begged them to send me figuring I could get some dives in but they wouldn't let me go, sigh!

I refuse to work on vacation... even if I'm taking a personal day and staying in Houston my cell phone somehow shuts itself off.

I would love to dive around work though.. I've tried to convience my boss to send to cayman for necessary training but he refuses

I always look at diving around work travel. Thanks to Uncle Sam footing the airfare I have hit San Carlos, the Keys, Puget Sound, and even Arkansas! My big goal was to dive Lake Titicaca while in Bolivia but that got squashed thanks to our invasion of Iraq. Now if I can only go TDY to Guam...

I got my AOW in Belize while "working from home." I never told anybody I was gone and did my projects from the internet cafe when I wasn't diving. I don't object to a "working vacation" if the other option is no vacation at all.

Um, I thought work was diving and diving was work? You mean you all have real jobs? What a shame. Oh, you also get real paychecks. Hmmmm?

The nature of my work doesn't allow that, but from what I understand, if you schedule a job interview while on vacation, you can deduct the whole trip from your taxes as job hunting expenses. I'm not a tax expert, but I imagine there's a similar loop-hole for working vacations?

I'm sure the IRS would have field day with this.

IRS "You're a software developer"
Me "Yeah"
IRS "How can you write a trip to Rotan off as a work expense"
Me "I was developing an underwater application for dive computers research you know?"
IRS "You mean you were scuba diving?"
Me "Right research"
IRS "For a dive computer"
Me "Right"
IRS "When is this coming out"
Me "Uhm uhm uhm the schedule date hasn't been decided"
IRS "...."
