Yes, there are still heros, despite what the media would have us believe.

I agree with you about the media.

And certainly about the heroism--an awesome, thoughtful and heroic statement.

What I can't agree with is...

What is the point?

A thousand more Iraqis, Syrians, Iranians, Yemenis, et.al. will rise up for each one that has been killed. The problem needs to be solved at the source.

And until that is fixed, (if it can be) more of our brave men and women will die. They are the future of America--they should not be sacrified in vain.
There are old divers and there are bold divers, but there ain't no old, bold divers.

He is a true hero. He received the Navy Cross on May 6th 2004, a version of that story first appeared May 7th 2004 - in case you are wondering why it wasn't on the news recently. The story was carried by many major news outlets but, sadly, this was the same time that the Iraqi prisoner abuse stories were still making the headlines. It didn't help the story that Bob Lonsberry puts it out as an anti-press story before the main stream media can even get to it. It makes it kinda rough to reference a story that was put out to make the media look like a bunch of anti-American liars.
Original Story

It saddens me when people take a true hero like Brian Chontosh and use him to further their own agenda.

actualy, the story first appeared a year earlier, when he took the actions he did during the invasion.

the award didn't pop out of nowhere, his heroic acts were known the day they happened.

remember the embedded reporters?????
OK, lets make a deal. If you stop telling me how to dive, I'll stop going down to the bus station at 2am to slap d***s out of your mouth.

After having served on both fronts I have to agree that the media is VERY biased in it's reporting. It seems that they want to stir up the debate of wether we should have troops overseas or not, rather than supporting the troops who actually are there. But it's part of the job and you have to realize that you're not doing it for credit. I can remember missions that I've gone on where another unit got credit. No worries, glad to do it.

Life is very biased in general...we all highlight that which we think is appropriate or serves the purpose for which we are striving for.

For example...when you go an interview for a job...everyone is focused on the positive...both you and the company. When you are excited about something you focus on the good stuff...not the negative.

And when you want to make a point...you use facts to justify your arguement. I do find it frustrating that the news does not focus on anything that is positive for the most part but alas we are partially to blame...afterall 'negativity' sells and the positive fluff stuff does not.

However this forum has been created for our divers in uniform to share with us the other side...or their story...or just give us a glimpse of something we might not see in the mainstream.

Forge on...and please continue to share. :birthday: -ww

Life is very biased in general...we all highlight that which we think is appropriate or serves the purpose for which we are striving for.

true statement....but I think the press abuses their freedom almost to the point of propeganda (also applies to law enforcement) ....telling us exactly what they want us to hear and no more....twisting the facts (or omitting important information) to get the tilt they want... rarely do we get the 'real' story and all of the facts - or what led up to the incident. (and I doubt we could really imagine what it is like without being there).

Just my opinion, but I'm a bit cynical.

I read a post by someone in one of the many forums I have read and I can't seem to find it to quote exactly ... It read something like...

"if you can read this, thank a teacher....if it's in english, thank a soldier"...

That says quite a bit. I don't know about everyone else, but they certainly have my respect and gratitude.

Hey HipShot,

Thanks a million for sharing this. I just returned from Iraq several months ago and I can GuaranDAMNtee that America is doing the correct, right, proper and caring thing by being in Iraq, helping rid the world of terrorists and insurgents, putting Saddam Hussein on trial and helping rebuild the country.

Not meaning to steal your thread here, but, I was introduced to two Iraqi national interpreters that had grown up in the Sunni Triangle. I had breakfast or lunch with one of the interpreters every week for about 4 months. He had grown up just north of Bagdad and had 15 of his fellow interpreters killed off over time. He still believed in the way America was helping the Iraqi people out and thanked me profusely on more than one occasion. He put his life on the line every day by being the main interpreter for the Civil Affairs officer, whom I went to several military schools with, that was responsible for a large area of Iraq just north of Bagdad.

It is a true travesty that the American public do not really know the good things that we are doing for the general Iraqi population. For instance, it has been estimated that there are fewer than 10,000 insurgents in Iraq, a country of approximately 25,000,000. But, does ABC, NBC or CBS tell anybody about this, Heck No. It would spoil there socialistic agenda.

I could go on and on, but, I fear I would become very passionate about this subject and this forum is not exactly the most appropriate for telling and spreading the truth about defending the freedoms of the Iraqi people.

But, the truth is out there on Department of Defense websites and if people really want to know the truth, they will seek it out.

Again, thanks a million for sharing the link with all of us. It is sincerely appreciated by those who want the truth to be told and known. I should know, I drove in convoys all over Iraq for over 11 months, and know the truth about us helping the Iraqi people to establish a democratic form of government.

Thank you's are not requested here, but, if you wish to thank the American Soldiers and President George W. Bush for making the hard, but correct, decision in helping the Iraqi people out, just pass the ENTIRE TRUTH along and let it be heard.

Truthfully and sincerely,

Kevin

Thank you. I am glad to hear from one that has been there instead of the those who exaggerate , piss, whine and moan to further their political agenda.
