It's not looking good for me for Saturday. I went backpacking this past weekend and took a nasty spill on the trail - managed to twist my ankle pretty good. It is still a little swollen today, and I still have some pain when I try to walk on it. I am going to try it in the pool on Thursday and see how it feels.

I was really looking forward to meeting some of you all, but I don't want to chance it if I am not 100%. I'll keep you posted.

Sorry to hear about your ankle. Hope it heals soon. We would love to have you and promise to fin slowly with you if you come along.

Jim if you still want to get in the water but don't fell you can swim, I am looking for a volunteer for the fish feeding dive. We put a little extra weight on you and then smear canned dog off all over you and put you on the bottom, hover over you and watch the catfish and carp clean you up! Just as a precaution, you should wear a wetsuit for this type of activity and a hood too!! Some of the fish get a little excited!! LOL

Are you the same JimG that added me (leah on scubaboard) to the dirAtlanta mailing list? and answered some gear questions for me?

Hope you get better soon!

Sorry to hear about your ankle. Hope it heals soon. We would love to have you and promise to fin slowly with you if you come along.

My biggest concern is that I use my ankles heavily when finning - like 90% of what I do in the water with my feet involves significant ankle movement (modified frog kick, sculling, etc). If I put weight straight down on my foot, everything is fine, but any movement that involves rolling the ankle is still painful. I won't really know what I can do with it until I actually get it in the water and see.

Are you the same JimG that added me (leah on scubaboard) to the dirAtlanta mailing list? and answered some gear questions for me?

Actually, I am - is that a "Good Thing" (hoping so)?

Yeah Jim it is. I really apprecite you including me on the list. Just before I posted asking you, I went back and read some of the emails that you sent answering some questions that I had. I thought I had read your name before. After my incident, I really appreciated the DIR folks reaching out to me and answering the many questions that I had. Is your name on Scuba board dirAtlanta? How did you end up on SD? Was that in connection with the discussion on my incident? Just wondering.

Your incident was a topic of discussion among several of our more experienced DIR-Atlanta members (including the person who posts on SB under that name). We were all pretty much dumbfounded at what happened to you.

I always worry that people are going to get turned off to diving after a bad incident, and I personally hate to see that happen. Since you were interested in info on DIR (and since outreach is part of what we in DIR-Atlanta see as our "mission"), we felt that you might benefit from interacting with our group. You may never adopt the full-blown DIR style of diving, but maybe you'll meet a few folks who know something about true teamwork. Sometimes just knowing that there are people out there who will "watch your back" is enough to get you through a bad experience with someone who didn't.

I actually went a step further and checked out the rest of SD, and then decided to join after lurking around for a week or so. I kind of like that you all seem to have more of a sense of "community" than some of the other boards I have visited, and that people seem to be able to discuss things without a lot of name-calling (even when there is disagreement).

So I guess you could say that your incident was the thing that indirectly brought me here. It's all your fault! :D

Jim, it is the Wench that keeps us in line and who has done such a great job in building this community. And she beats us with fin when we get out of line!! LOL!! Well not really, but the Wench and the other Mods keep a close eye on things so that we can all be part of this community in a healthy way that benefits everyone. Sometimes as you well know, folks can get really out of hand with a sense of being anonymous online. A good many people from this site get together locally where they live for a dive of the month or a happy hour to talk shop. So even though we aren't all able to get together, we have lots of small groups doing that all over.

I know when people talk about DIR they are passionate one way or another about it. Now this could develop into a whole thread by itself on what is good and bad about, but let me just say a couple of things. After my incident, the DIR folks and the non DIR tech folks were the ones to take the time to PM and email me and help me work through what happened. They helped me to understand the physiological aspects as well as the psychological aspects of what happened. It was very helpful to me to have someone dissect all that and help me understand what I did wrong and how not to go there again. With regard to DIR gear, I like the simplicity of the configuration and how secure a bp/w feels when you put it on and yet feel unrestricted. I will be purchasing a bp/w in the next couple of months.

Anyway, back to SD. So many shops just toss new divers into the water with a new cert card and a rental gear and leave them to flounder on their own. That is why and how I got connected with SD. I was alone at the lake with my rental gear trying to find a buddy on the fly. Part of our community to bring good divers together to have a good time and dive safely with one another. It is nice to be able to come to SD and get to know folks online a bit before you do the insta buddy thing at the waters edge. As a new diver this has been very helpful to me. I know for folks who have been diving for years and have a few set buddies it might not be as appealing, but for those of us who are new or those who travel and their buds can't come along SD is invaluable to us.

If you can't make it this time Jim, maybe we can host the whole DIRatlanta gang sometime soon. We would love to have you guys come to dive and cook out with us. I was talking with the Wench yesterday and we talking about during some of the colder months of maybe doing a happy hour where get together and have some diving presentations to help us become better divers. There is so much to learn and even after you have been diving a long time, you still have more to learn. We can always become a better diver regardless of where were are in our skill and ability level.

Hope your ankle continues to heal. Have a great day and thanks for letting me be a part of DirAtlanta and for joining in the SD community with me. Glad you are a part.

I am getting a couple of 130 cu ft tanks to be able to keep up with Debbie in her 80 cu ft. I just don't understand how she sips air and can make it last forever!!! I thought a 100 cu ft would even the score last time we dove together and she still out lasted me. Unreal!!!!

It's because I'm so full of hot air, anyway :birthday:

Oh we will have hot cider too!

For anyone who wants to bring along a pot of some soup or something, bring it on! I will have my Coleman stove and we can put on and heat it up for you.

See you there!

I will bring homemade vegetable beef soup. :birthday: I was thinking about that the other day but wasn't sure how we'd heat it. Thanks for mentioning it, Leah! The Weather Channel says it's supposed to be windy that day, so hot soup will be yummy.

Just picked up a second ProCat heater. This one is 3000 btu and has a fan. Should keep it very warm. If it gets chilly we will turn on the back up 1500 btu ProCat.

Can't wait for this weekend.

Just double checked the forecast and it looks like the rain will be gone by morning. We should have sunny breezy conditions with a high in the mid 60's on Saturday and up to 70 on Sunday.

See you at the waters edge!!
