Im starting to move towards the darkside (not that far yet SDM, give it some time) and slowly changing over my gear so that i can progress through the courses(adv nitrox, Deco Proc, etc) im wanting to take so i can get to the diving im wanting to do to get the photos i would like.

I pretty know what gear im going to need but the one thing i cant figure out is how do i measure for a backplate as i personally dont fit in to the standard measurements as im longer in the torso and wider in the shoulders and trunk then most.

Do i need a plate that goes from the crown of my hips to roughly C4-5 where the notch is between my shoulder blades or what?

Guidance in this would be greatly appreciated

For a great many years, the only plate size was what is not a "medium" plate. I think of the others as really custom plates made to fit the most difficult of cases.

I'm 6'0, 240# with broad shoulders and my normal size plate works great for me.

The adjustment in a backplate system is done via the harness, not via the plate. As Perrone alluded, it's very rare for anyone to need special sizing on their plate. I'd start with a standard plate and make sure the harness is adjusted properly. Try to find someone in your area who is knowledgeable about such things to help you with it. If you can't make that work (which I doubt will be a problem), then go for the custom plate.

Thanks guys. Im not asking if i should be looking at a custom plate. The info i had been looking at was DSS site for sizing and thats why i asked.

Having met you and having a fair idea of your size, I would agree with the prior posts.

Most people are better off with the standard size plate. If you are a professional basketball player or fit the other extreme, you will want the more custom fits, but other than that, you can adjust with your harness.

I'm 5'7 and use a standard backplae; as Jim said, the adjustment is done with the harness. When it's adjusted right you should be able to reach over your head and touch the top of the BP.

I'll be happy to work with you to fit your harness. I'm in town most weekends, and have a pool.

The entire gene pool dives the same DSS kit with medium plate. You've met me, Sara is 5'3 (barely) and Elliot is a little taller, and much narrower than me.

I'd go along with what everyone else says about the sizing. I have seen a few tiny ladies with the smaller plates, and some very large men that use the larger ones.

You can always get your back measured, and then ask Tobin (DSS) what he suggests.
