People love to talk about what they "got" for Christmas. Well this year I didn't receive a single gift related to diving (but I'm going to use the gift certificates to buy a few new field guides and renew my subscription to SCUBA Diving.

However, I did get the greatest gift I could ask for. My 22-year old son called and said he wanted to spend Christmas evening out here on the island with me. Awesome. This was our FIRST Christmas together. For the first 17 years his Mom kept him a secret from me. The past few years I think his Mom's cooking won out over mine (can't blame him, but I did bake a great turkey and had plenty of pumpkin pie).

It was a really nice evening!

Now that, my friend is a wonderful Christmas gift.

I got my wish as well, Donna was here in VA with me. Tomorrow, we fly to FL and then sometime late next week, I have to drive back to VA to start my new job on Jan. 8.

No doubt - you win the "Best Present" award.

I also found a way to make the season even more enjoyable, and one your son would enjoy too - buy a copy of "Twisted Christmas" by Twisted Sister for next year. Makes all the sappy songs tolerable to listen to - and an improved version of the Twelve Days:

On my heavy metal Christmas my true love gave to me,
12 silver crosses
11 black mascaras
10 pairs of platforms
9 tattered t-shirts
8 pentagrams
7 leather jackets
6 cans of hairspray
5 skull earrings
4 quarts of Jack
3 studded belts
2 pairs of spandex pants
and a tattoo of Ozzy!

There's nothing better. I spent Christmas with my kids as well. Of course, my daughter lives with me, but it was special to have them both together.

One of my favorite movies is "Children of a Lesser God" in which Twisted Sister is mentioned (but I can't remember if they actually played music). I recently heard them singing carols on the Leno show. Yikes!

Heck, my daughter didn't completely complete the transition to human until she was 25. Ain't parenting sometime grand??? But when she did finally decide to get serious, she did big time - finished college after years of dinking around, and was on the Dean's List, to boot. Now she's 28, has a good job in her field (GIS mapping like her Mom, how about that?) with benefits, and never asks for $$$ anymore... The good job part was a kind of early Xmas present for me, I guess...
Back after a long absence - whew, too busy at work!
