I just received this info regarding the workshops at this year's Beneath The Sea, for 27, 28 & 29 March 2009. While it's not confidential, you're getting this info before most folks will. W-1 PSI Visual Cylinder Inspection and HAZMAT Training
A. Dale Fox, (Sussex room) 8-5:30

This formal course in the visual inspection of SCUBA and SCBA cylinders prepares the graduate to professionally and thoroughly inspect breathing air cylinders. PSI training is recognized by US courts as meeting the definition of and has been trained. Completion also satisfies the OSHA requirement for hazardous material (HAZMAT) training for all employees who fill, use or otherwise handle high pressure gas cylinders. Cost $350 Limit 27

. W-2 PSI Visual Cylinder Inspector UPDATE, A. Dale Fox, (Sussex room), 8-10

This is a workshop exclusively for personal previously trained as a
PSI Visual Cylinder Inspectors. The course is recommended for those
whose last formal VCI training was 3 or more years ago and will meet
OSHA and DOT update training requirements. Attendees MUST bring a
copy of their PSI certificate showing their PSI Inspector Number.
Cost $175. Limit 27.


W-3 PSI Valve Repair Technician, A. Dale Fox, (Sussex room) 10-12


This course provides a broad overview of valve types, valve repair
and valve care. It was developed in close association with the valve
manufacturers. Students will be provided a Certificate of Completion. Cost
$175. Limit 27

W-4 : PSI Oxygen Cylinder Cleaning Technician, A. Dale Fox, (Sussex room) 1-3

EVERY nitrox cylinder needs to be cleaned for oxygen service. This is not
a difficult procedure, although it does require diligent application of
prescribed procedures and close attention to safety precautions.
This 2 hour program is in full compliance with the cleaning requirements of
the Compressed Gas Association, US government agencies and with
manufacturers policies. It is restricted to current PSI Visual Cylinder
Inspectors. Cost $175 Limit 27



W-5 PSI Eddy Current Technician, A. Dale Fox, (Sussex room) 3-5
.
. Eddy current testing is designed to detect cracks in the neck area of aluminum cylinders. However, improper use of the testing devices is resulting in many false readings. This workshop provides manufacture-approved training in the operation of the Visual Plus, Visual Plus 3 and Visual Eddy instruments. As this training is an extension of basic PSI VCI training, attendees MUST bring a copy of their PSI certificate showing their PSI Inspector Number. While not a requirement, it is recommended that attendees also bring their own Visual Plus/Visual Eddy instruments so they may train on their own instruments. Cost $175. Limit 27


W-5 PSI Visual Cylinder Inspector UPDATE, A. Dale Fox, (Morris room), 3-6

This is a 3 hour workshop exclusively for personal previously trained as PSI Visual Cylinder Inspectors. The course is recommended for those whose last formal VCI training was 3 or more years ago and will meet OSHA and DOT update training requirements. Attendees MUST bring a copy of their PSI certificate showing their PSI Inspector Number. Cost $150 Limit 27


W-6 DAN First Aid for Hazardous Marine Life Injuries, Mike Emmerman and Pat Stockhausen, (Morris room), 9-12
Learn how to identify hazardous marine life and what to do if you or your buddy gets bitten, stung, punctured or poisoned! Everyone will take part in hand-on first aid training and real-life scenarios. Price includes workbook and DAN certification. PADI certification is available for additional $15 to be paid in class. Cost $80 Limit 21

W-7 DAN Neurological Assessment for Divers, Mike Emmerman and Pat Stockhausen, (Morris room) 1-4
Learn how to perform a basic neurological assessment on a diver and convince him/her that oxygen first aid might help! This is a hands-on course for current (within last 2 years) DAN Oxygen First Aid Providers. Bring DAN O2 cards – they must be checked. Price includes workbook and DAN certification. W-8 Getting Pro Results with your Point & Shoot, Jack and Sue Drafahl, (Passaic room) 9-12


This in-depth workshop covers everything necessary to take dynamic underwater images with your point & shoot digital camera. The workshop will cover topics that range from setup before the dive to maintenance at the end of the trip, and everything in between. Students will learn exposure mode techniques, lighting with external and internal flash, white balance, RAW files dealing with shutter delay, accessory lenses, macro and wide angle photography. This workshop will also be valuable to the D-SLR user who is considering a point & shoot as a second camera system. Cost $65. Limit 30



W-9 Introduction to Photoshop, Larry and Denise Tackett, (Passaic room), 1-4

This workshop introduces the student to Adobe Photoshop and the art of image control, modification and manipulation. Topics covered include: Bridge, RAW files, tools, tonal adjustments and layers. Students will apply techniques to correct, improve, alter, and create imagery. Image input, storage, and output will be covered. W-10 Improving Your Underwater Video, Jim and Pat Stayer, (Bergen room) 9-12


This 3-hour workshop will cover the difference between HD and SD video formats. The course will include many shooting techniques and advanced camera features that will improve the quality of your video. In addition, the workshop will explore methods of composing and lighting your subjects; developing story lines; and the different components of editing including a demonstration of the what to do and not to do. With your underwater camera and home computer you too can produce a professional looking video. Cost $65 Limit 30.



W-11 Mastering Strobe Lighting Techniques, Cathy Church, (Bergen room) 1-4

This workshop will cover all aspects of using a strobe to create more beautiful underwater photos: • using TTL and manual exposures for macro, zoom and wide-angle
lenses, • primary and balanced flash fill, • Cathy's favorite creative lighting techniques , • multiple strobes, • tips for accurate strobe aim • choosing and caring for your strobe. The workshop will include a detailed handout and question and answer period. Cathy's easy style and enthusiastic presentation makes her a popular speaker. Learn how a few simple changes can make a stunning photo of even a mundane subject. Cost $65. Limit 30

W-12 Underwater Photography Made Simple, Michel Gilbert and Danielle Alary, (Sussex room), 9-12

This 3-hour workshop will help any beginner underwater photographer or those who have some experience. Learn which equipment is best used in fish portrait, macro or wide-angle photography. Michel & Danielle will share with you their no-nonsense simple approach to underwater photography. Learn how to work with your strobes in manual mode by remembering 4 numbers. No matter which system you plan to use, if you want a head start, this is the workshop to attend. Get a fresh look at a fantastic specialty by two seasoned pros who love to share their knowledge. W-13 Intermediate and Advanced Concepts in U/W Photography, Michele Gilbert and Danielle Alary, (Sussex room) 1-4

A 3-hour workshop designed to improve your knowledge of underwater photography concepts and techniques. This session is integrated with the presenters’ other workshop entitled “Underwater Photography Made Simple”. While you will learn more about advanced equipment, the bulk of the workshop is focused on concepts like, workflow, in the field and at home, lighting, subject selection, composition techniques, conceptualization and more. Using plain language, these experts will help you achieve more. Cost $65 Limit 30


W-14 Rebreathers 101, Dan Crowell, (Morris room), 9-12

Many divers are under the impression that rebreathers are reserved for deep divers, tech or military divers. Wrong- rebreathers just do it differently. Imagine never having to haul tanks to the dive shop or never having to wait for a nitrox fill because no matter where you go you'll always have the perfect mix. How about doing a dive to 60 ft for 3 hours no matter what your air consumption rate is, and no decompression? Join Dan Crowell for an inside look at how these systems work and what make them a much better alternative to regular scuba even if you're not looking to go tech. Cost $65 Limit 30.


W-15 Shooting, Marketing and Selling your U/W Photography
Larry and Denise Tackett, (Morris room), 1-4

Everyone would love to have one of his or her images published in a magazine, book, calendar etc. What does it take to make that happen? This workshop will discuss how to go about marketing yourself and your imagery whether you have 100 or 100,000 images. Special emphasis will be placed on using the power of the Internet to help make those all-important first and subsequent sales. Students should bring 20 of their images for review. W-16 Hands-On Underwater Photoshop Jack and Sue Drafahl, (Passaic room) 9-12


This three-hour workshop will be hands-on with Photoshop. Each person attending will be required to bring a laptop computer loaded with either photoshop 7, CS, CS2 or CS3. A selection of sample underwater images will be distributed and we will work together correcting them. Samples will include some of the biggest problems that plague underwater photographers, so you can then apply what you've learned to your own images. Students should bring six images for editing during the last hour, if time allows. Handout Materials Included. Cost $100. Limit 24




W-17 Dive Accident Management for Divers, Eric Douglas and Martin McCafferty (DAN Staff), (Passaic room) 1-4

This workshop will focus on three aspects of dive accident management: 1) unique nature of dive accidents whether they occur at a resort or a hometown lake; 2) steps to recognizing DCI in Divers; 3) oxygen – its basis and uses, safety aspects, and the oxygen window. The workshop will begin with a brief overview of diving to include dive accidents and the numbers, physics, decompression models and computers. This will be followed by delineation between DCI and DCS in dive-related injuries, treatment for DCI, and, additional review of other water related injuries with recognition signs and treatment. This DAN program is a “must” for captains, divemasters and instructors. Cost $65 Limit 21.



W-18 Becoming Successful with Macro Photography, Maria Di Paolo-Greer, (Bergen room), 9-12

Want to take close-up photographs like the professionals in the scuba diving magazines? Then join Maria Di Paolo-Greer, author of “A Delicate Balance: The South Pacific” (www.DiverAtHeart.com), where you will learn about the art and science of macro photography. Topics include equipment characteristics, shooting conditions and techniques, composition, and required diving skills for successful macro photography. This is a perfect workshop for the photographer enthusiast who wants to either get started with macro photography or improve their skills. W-19 Oxygen First Aid and AED for SCUBA Diving, Kei Shimada and Jim Vafeas, (Bergen room) 1-4


As a diver, you can receive training to provide vital first aid that can make a difference to a scuba diver with decompression illness. The DAN Oxygen Provider and AED for SCUBA courses provide entry-level training in the recognition and management of possible diving-related injuries using emergency oxygen as well as care for sudden cardiac arrest using an AED. CPR Review is provided during the class. At successful completion, you will receive 2 certifications - DAN Oxygen First Aid for SCUBA and AED for SCUBA. All materials and fees included.
