I have the distinct possibility of having a partial plate put in ,due to the number or lack there of ,of teeth on my upper part of my mouth.Friday ,I was eating Pizza, bit dow on the crust and crunch, a front tooth to the right of center..Down to the gumb line.Since I'm missing other teeh in the back,my Dentist is recommending I go with a Plate.More teeth for the $$$.

My question to those SD members who have such a piece of hardware in their mouth. How will this impact diving,? or maybe not.Other than the obvious of my reg bite. What or How has changed in your Diving if any , or in what way?

Greg moving your topic to health related discussions...not general discussions under Protecting our Planet! :teeth:

As for a partial plate affecting your diving...NO. It will be the same as you have now. You may initially experience some jaw fatigue until you are used to it but once you are used to the plate it won't impact your diving!

It'er jest make yer smile purtier! :teeth:

Depending upon your dental insurance and finances, you might want to consider dental implants.

Done properly, they will last the rest of your life, help to maintain your other teeth better, and prevent bone loss in your jaws, and give you nice dependable strong teeth. An option for you that your dentist might not have discussed with you. Dental implants are compatible with diving.

I do not know about plates, but I can say that I have had crowns come out five times while on liveaboard trips. The positive is that it always happened during meals, and I did not swallow and that it did not hurt. When I returned home in each case, I had to get a new crown, which is definitely not inexpensive. Perhaps diving is like a canary in the coal mine when it comes to teeth. The one thing for sure is that you do not want a situation where air gets into your tooth on a dive trip. :-D

Similar to what Rodney said...

NEVER go diving with a temp crown...they are just that temporary and are prone to have air leaks which will cause severe pain and may make you want to bolt for the surface. :-D

Hey Greg; sorry to here of your dilemma. I like my dentist but hate to go see him. I once surfaced from a dive and heard a crack sound in my mouth and when I got back on the boat I found part of a filling had broken off upon surfacing, there must have been the tiniest of air pockets in the filling and it expanded and broke off. Good luck, Tim

:-D My teeth are the last thing I would expect to have problems with! Air expansion in fillings? Losing crowns while on vacation? Posted Image

I'm sorry to hear that some of our members experienced these problems while diving.

After seeing the plate,it would be de-tachable. It would be under my palate of my mouth.I don't think i'm ready for that.To much like false teeth.Gonna get the one crowned and hope for the best. Thanks everybody.--

I have a crown, and was really surprised by how much it cost, even with dental insurance. While you said you did not have ins, it is possible to have an implant put in to fix a partial plate... another option to consider.

The Dentist did mention it,but had said it would be a considerable $ + difference. They really have you by the kahoonas.I'll ask, as I'm torn between what I can financially handle right now. Thanks again.

A plate is not that bad if you only have a few missing teeth. Its more like a brace then a set of false teeth. And if you are missing teeth then even getting a crown will not resolve the alignment/movement issues.

I believe you can do dental implants at any time aka when your finances are better for instance.
