I am new to SD's site and I am trying to learn how to navigate. Looking to take my daughter on a trip to AUS on winter break her freshman year of college. Want to leave around Christmas Day and do AUSTRALIA live aboard (maybe Mike Ball) for a week and then inland touring for 7-10 days. Anyone else interested?? Or any helpful hints on travel to this neck of the woods??? Kamala any thoughts?
Looking for a cool trip December 2011

We went a couple of years ago to dive the Great Barrier Reef. Just realize that's the middle of summer and it was very hot in the Cairns area. We went to Sydney first, which was beautiful that time of year. The weather in Sydney reminded me of San Diego.
Someday I'd like to go back and do a coastal tour from Brisbane to Cairns.
I was in awe of the size of Australia. So much to see, and so little time..

SWMBO and I spend 3 weeks in Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Cairns - didn't scratch the surface.
I loved Australia and its people - think Texas without the sanctimony....
GBR was great too - a most memorable trip.
At the time Qantas had specials on flights around the country - I can't remember the exact price, but something like $500 for unlimited travel.

No aquarium, no tank in a marine land, however spacious it may be, can begin to duplicate the conditions of the sea. And no dolphin who inhabits one of those aquariums or one of those marine lands can be considered normal.

I'm based in Sydney. If you make it over this way then let me know. I'm always looking for new dive partners. Unfortunately there isn't much worth while diving in Sydney, but a few hours drive north there is a place called fish cave rock that is meant to be good. If you are heading north to Cairns then look at diving out of Port Douglas as well. I'm off to check out the west coast next month and will let you know.

Australia is wonderful...I miss not having EV there as they offered the biggest boat with the smallest number of divers. However Mike Ball is great as are Spirit of Freedom. Check the itineraries closely as 3 -7 day options are offered. If possible do only a 7 day option that is not comprised of a 3 and 4 day option or you will spend a lot of time in transit. Also you should get good deals during this timeframe.
