At least three skeletons, one of them as old as 13,000 years and two of them very well preserved, were discovered by a team of cave divers in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula in 2001 and 2002. The discovery, announced by archaelogists at a conference today, helps prove that humans inhabited Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula at least 5,000 before Mayas began building monuments at sites such as Tulum.
The project took life after skeptical officials were convinced by cave divers to finance a survey of the Yucatan Cenotes after some of the divers mentioned seeing skeletons along the underwater caves. The oldest find was made 404 yards into a cave were divers had 40 minutes to dive their way in to the site, worked there for 20 minutes, and spent another 40 minutes diving their way back.
