I've seen a few messages that said don't send the newer version of a Word document since they couldn't open it.
Here's a link to the "Microsoft Office Compatibility Pack" that will let those with earlier version of the Office suite (or just Word) open and save to the newer version:

Those that use OpenOffice the latest version (currently 3.3.0) can open the newer file types too.

About time Microsloth does something about this. I use Open Office. I got tired early on of incompatibilities with different versions of Microsloth's products, and was not going to get lured into the upgrade path they wanted to increase revenues.
