I finally have a new computer working and one of the defaults was to do auto updates upon exiting. I need to turn this off as I could be on a plane or catching a flight and need to close quickly and therefore have to interrupt the update.
How do you turn them off in win7? Thank you! Kamala

Turning off the computer in those circumstances shouldn't adversely affect either the update or your computer. But if you want to turn off automatic updates (I have it turned off on mine) the method varies according to the version of Windows. I'll look at it on your computer tomorrow.

1- click on the Window Start button
2-in Start Search box type UPDATE
3- programs will show as you type
4-select Windows Update
5-click on change settings
6-under Important Updates select make your selection
automatic is "recommended" ie: updates are "on"
never check for updates "not recommended" ie: updates are "off"
for my Vista a dialog box opens and you can delay the updates until another usage time. The update may contain secutity patches against threats so you DO want to have your computer update.

Thank you! I am using cellular access 99% of the time so have to save updates for when I can have time.
I think I did it...there were several other options but I will go in periodically to update.

The other option if in a rush is to Hibernate your PC and not shut down. Hibernation saves your PC exactly as you left it with all proggies open. Boots faster and you have everything left the same way as when you shut your PC down. So if email and your web browser are open when you hibernate they will be open when you boot.
If hibernation is not listed in the shut down options, go to power settings and look for hibernation option there. Specifics vary by OS.

Remember, email is an inefficient communications forum. You may not read things the way it was intended. Give people the benefit of the doubt before firing back... Especially if it is ME...!

Simon I LOVED hibernating...it was the greatest thing since sliced wrapped bread until after almost exactly 1 year (about a week longer) my computer crashed. I think hibernating works best if you are not mobile. It seems the hard drive is not parked properly like it is when you shut down. Granted I probably took hibernating to the extreme but after what I just went thru...I think I will shut down as often as I can regardless of how painful it is since it is ALL much less painful than losing your computer and your data.
