Another alternative is to do the boat diving package, but a group of people will get together and rent a truck for the week so that they can go to other shore dive sites during the afternoon/evening, and visit more distant restaurants on the evenings we're on our own for dinner, and lastly so they can explore the island on the off-gassing day. Whether you rent for a day or for the week, I'm sure you'll be able to find others to help share the cost of the vehicle.

The best vehicle to rent is the dual-cab truck that seats 4, and it has tank racks build into the pickup bed. You can get tanks from the resort.

Word of warning: if you shore dive with a truck, leave NOTHING in the vehicle and keep the windows rolled down. The only real crime in Bonaire is the petty theft out of unattended diver vehicles. Bottles of water are probably safe, but nothing else is.

Have been looking at some well reviewed shore diving sites. Anyone interested in getting together on a truck rental?

Mike: one great shore diving site that people rarely get to is called Red Beryl. It's way south, just north of the kite boarding beach (they have taken over the dive site Aquarius...it's dangerous to dive that site because of the boarders!). Red Beryl was a forest of soft gorgonians and tons of critters last time I dived it. I've been trying to get the boat to dive that site for years, with no luck (yet).

The general rule of thumb is to dive sites up north in the morning, and southern sites in the afternoon....they say it's because of current & tides, but really there isn't much difference IMHO.

I would share a day's truck rental just to do a 4th (and maybe a 5th) dive of the day down there, to see if that site is still as good as I remember!

I've climbed those steps in full gear....my ex was only halfway up when I reached the top!
(It's not really 1000, but you may think it is at the end of the climb!)

That's one reason I stopped technical diving/recreational diving from a truck in Canada. There is way too much luggage carriyng. Now, the only way to get me diving from a truck is for cave diving.

So go to the gym, train, lift weights and prepare your self !
