Hey gang...if you live near Raleigh or are planning to be in the area...drop into Divers Alert Network DAN and pick up some cash for helping them with several HBO studies!

Gene Profiling of Decompression Stress

Participants wanted for a US Navy Diving Research Study (DUHS IRB Pro#00012945).

Divers, or those with previous hyperbaric exposure experience, are needed for a study of changes in gene expression that may indicate decompression stress. Subjects will undergo ultrasound and blood will be drawn for gene testing.

Prior to the study, female subjects will require a pregnancy test. If you are pregnant, you will not be able to participate.

Subjects are compensated up to $200 for completing the experimental days.

Subjects must be between the age of 18-60 years, and have no physical impairment that would prevent them from diving.

For more information, please contact the study coordinator Dawn Kernagis at dnk4@duke.edu. #00012945

Scheduled dates:

Mar 14

Apr 10

Flying After Diving (FAD) Study

This study involves a single, dry resting chamber dive to 60 fsw for 55 min followed by a specific surface interval and then a simulated flight to 8,000 ft (the maximum cabin altitude allowed in commercial, pressurized aircraft) for four hours. All phases are conducted at the Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology (Hyperbaric Center) in Duke University Medical Center. The Flying After Diving Study is designed to evaluate the effect of altitude exposure following diving on the production of circulating bubble production and/or the development of decompression sickness. Studies are normally scheduled late Thursday afternoon and Friday during the week. Subjects are compensated with $120 for completion of the study. The protocol currently being tested has a surface interval of six hours. Please contact the Jeanette Moore (jmoore@dan.org) in the Research Department at DAN at 919-684-2948 x260 or toll-free 1-800-446-2671 x260 for more information and a detailed schedule. #00011800

Immersion Pulmonary Edema (IPE) Study

This is a US Navy-funded research study at Duke University Medical Center’s Center for Hyperbaric Medicine and Environmental Physiology. Volunteers are needed to study the effect of exercise while immersed to the neck in cold water on cardiac (heart) function. Subjects will be instrumented with an intravenous catheter and will have their heart and lungs studied with echocardiography. Prior to the study, subjects must come to the laboratory (1 - 2 hours) for a physical exam, 2D echo, orientation, and scheduling for the experimental day. The experimental day (4 hours) takes place at least a week later. Subjects will be paid $25 for the pre-screen or $150 for completion of the entire study.

Subjects must be 18-55 years of age, physically fit (be able to exercise constantly for 40 minutes), and have no physical impairment that would prevent them from participation.

For more information, please contact Mike Natoli at michael.natoli@duke.edu or 919-668-0017. #00019996

Scheduled dates: Most Wed or Thu

Hmmm. So I can make some easy dough accross town if I'm willing to let DAN bend me?

I guess if you're going to get bent, a chamber not a bad place to do it ;)
