ok,
step one - pick up magazine
step two - roll it tightly lengthwise (you can try rolling it the other way, but you'll have an extremely hard time. hint - roll it in the direction of least resistance)
step three - hold rolled magazine in hand like it's a hammer
step four - go to town
not much to it really. and it is incredibly effective.
just focus on the throat, and jab
great thing about hand-eye coordination, its an instinctive thing we all have which has been refined for us by many years of evolution. if you stare at something and push your hand out toward it, you will hit it. (this is why you always see car wrecks with the car smashed dead on into a tree, the last thing the driver stared at was that tree)
if someone comes at you with a knife, what would you rather block it with?
your bare hands and arms? or the magazine?
yeah, the pocket full of change is a great idea, but hard to control, and no accuracy. as noted, it isn't illegal, but then again, magazines aren't illegal anywhere in the world either.
i don't like the "stout" pen idea, have never found a pen that is quite "stout" enough when needed, and it doesn't extend your range or striking power any. it's like the old idea of holding a key between your fingers, yeah, you can scratch their eyes out........ while they're tickling your aorta with their knife.
something else most people forget,
you don't get to pick the fight, the fight picks you
you don't get to pick your attacker, the attacker picks you

p.s. And I can vouch for the attackers picking me! I certainly wouldn't have picked them!

Yeah I know: I've been branded a non-group person - doesn't play well with others. I am so upset. Let me know if you want to have some fun, without the drama - I'm good for that.

2) Live on a farm and you'll learn how to use that knife on animals that shouldn't be breeding
By all that is wet, I do hereby swear, (politely), and attest, upon pain of never diving again, (real or imagined), that I understand and affirm, that I agree to the above.

Not when I was in the Corp. They taught us to never get caught without our rifle and bayonet. Things have changed since, I know, but every Marine is a rifleman first - going back to 1775 when we took to the riggings on John Paul Jone's ship to shoot at British cannoneers. Many of today's DevilDogs are operating high tech weapons and powerful vehicles, but they'd better have and know their rifle well when things go to caca.1) Join the military and learn a trade, they'll teach you how to take the knife away from the attacker so you don't need to carry one!
Boy, that's radical. Lived on a family farm most of my life, and I've never used a knife on an animal - other than castrating bulls, notching ears, digging cuckleburrs out, opening feed sacks...2) Live on a farm and you'll learn how to use that knife on animals that shouldn't be breeding

there have been several very good suggestions here, like the pen, magazine and such ( the change one i like because i always seem to have a pocket full of pennies that i can hurl ).
but let me add a couple of others to the list
first for the ladies, you know that nice bag you carry with you that has a strap on it??? well if it weighs more then about 2-3 lbs, use it as if you swing hard enough that will knock a guy clean out (have been a unintential target a couple of time from ladies turning around a little to quick)
students, if you like the average student you have between 20-60lbs of books in your bag that you can swing around, that or grab a book and use it because it will hurt if you get someone with it(think of your algebra or english/ lit book).
i also work in a resturant as a bartender and always have a bottle opener on me (called a speed opener) and it makes a great little thing for rapping on fingers of servers or for people who get a little to close, also allowed on the aircraft by TSA so you can open your drink and defend yourself at the same time.
lets see what else, well that all i can think of for now. time to head toward class so i need to grab that algebra book
Tooth
now going slighting off topic, if your photographer like my self you have a multitude of options, from the tripod (makes great club), to a cable release, down to the camera body (especially if you have one with a battery grip/ booster) talk about some major damage, just dont use the lense as that could be costly
