Sometime during the day today it might be nice to reflect on today's anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. While the wall itself no longer stands, it remains as a symbol of the repression of millions who were imprisoned behind it.

One in a series of events that started with a Polish labor union and led eventually to the dissolution of the USSR. Who could have predicted such a turn of events?

The infamous Ronald Reagan "sound check" statement that he'd declared war on the Soviet Union, and bombing would start in 5 minutes.

I was stationed in Brussels then working with NATO when the wall came down. We sat around the tv and watched the celebration and event in awe. My German workmates were in tears. Of course later when thousands upon thousands of East Germans hauled butt across the border in case they changed their minds and put the wall back up, it was a different tune. Court case after court case of ""you are living on my family land and I want it back""" had to be solved.

I wanted to go to Berlin and chissel a peice of the wall off for myself, But with my job and security clearances, I wasnt able to travel to any place even slightly associated with communism for another 10 years. Now, its hard to find a piece of the original wall. I will settle for that it is just down.

Veterans day is coming up soon. My company does not recognize it as a holiday, so like so many other holidays I worked when I wore a uniform, this time I will be working again, to make sure the soldiers we are training here in Arizona know their stuff when they deploy....as will the other two Vets on my training team.

As the song says......" Some of it was magic and some of it was tragic..." But Im just glad i was able to contribute a little. No Vet asks for thanks....just want people to realize....Freedom....it aint free. And, when the fecal matter is hitting the oscillating air rotation device and the lead is flying....there isnt any high lofty thoughts of anything but keeping your butt alive and the butts of your brothers and sisters in arms alive.

Enjoy Vets day.....I will be at work.
Rich

Rich...many of us will be 'working' this Veteran's Day. Some have the honor to be helping the men and women that keep us free and safe from harm. I hold the former distinction and you as many hold the latter distinction. I am thankful that you are doing the job you are doing today. I am thankful that you have done the job that our men and women in the Armed Services are doing today and everyday...yes folks...even and most especially on the Holidays! And I am VERY thankful that men and women are fighting for our freedoms as we speak...some of them our very own single divers.com family. And yes...I am thankful for the technology and training that allows us to do more with less 'feet on the beat' or is that 'boots in the sand'?

God Bless or Praise to the Higher Power you recognize...ALL of our men and women who have been in the Armed Services, who are currently in the Armed Services and who work to support the Armed Services!

ALL of YOU are my HEROS!!!! :diver:

P.S. Rich...get an AAFES catalog and look at the beer steins. They still offer German Steins with peices of the wall on the lid. (I have several of them myself.)

You are absolutely correct Walter.....and it is a test given to many "fake" pieces being sold. The "bad guys" used asbestos and there are many pieces out there with no asbestos at all in the concrete.

Isnt it interesting the things we use to tell the truth from the non truth ????

Ditto about "the wall" coming down. What an amazing thing to see in our lifetime! Also DITTO what WW has stated about Veterans and Veterans Day tomorrow. Bless all the Veterans, past and present, for Freedom does not come cheap! Thank you to all who are serving and all who have served.
