After an 11 hour 23 minute run time, Brazilian cave diver Gilberto Menezes emerged from the Bananeira Sump cave system in Bahia, Central Brazil on September 20, 2004 with a new world record. He used open circuit scuba and 33 tanks (carried and staged) to complete a 21,000 foot solo penetration. Maximum depth was 50 meters and trimix 16/70 was the bottom gas during exploration of the deepest section of the system. It was his 43rd immersion into the Bananeira cave system in the past two years.

Mike,

No, I haven't. I'm IMAX challenged in my area. Where can you see old IMAX presentations if at all?

And why would anyone in their right mind want to attempt something like this? Oh, that's right... I said in their right mind. Absolutely crazy IMHO.

TOP TEN REASONS WHY HE WOULD SOLO DIVE 21,000 FEET INTO A CAVE

10. Took the chapter on "male caving" from the book "Men Are From Mars/Women Are Fom Venus" way too literally.

9. Once threw that rare double headed indian coin into a wishing well and is determined to get it back.

8. Had to snake a really nasty clog.

7. Decided to take that mock up Gavin scooter for the ultimate joy ride!

6. Not much else to do in central Brasil.

5. Saw a tribe of headhunters test firing snorkels.

4. Figured that piranha would never go in there!

3. Did it for his solo scooter trimix cave cohones c-card, because he needed to self-actualize after the inadequacy he felt without having the much coveted L.A. County certification.

2. Heard the famous words, "Dad, could you help me with my science project?" and got in a bit over his head.

And, the number one reason someone would solo dive 21,000 feet into a cave...

1. He wanted to impress all the lovely ladies on SD!!!

Thanks TraceMalin... after reading the number one reason I now understand why he did it! Crazy like a fox I say.
