Since we try to bring items to donate to one of the local schools, it would be helpful to have some idea of the items they need, want, could use, don't need, etc.

Between now and next May, there will be a multitude of clearance sales of almost everything, so why not plan ahead and buy a little bit at a time.

For example, this past weekend a local store had a sale on pencils, a new pack of 12, for 23 cents per package. A local thrift shop sometimes has school supplies to sell  in bulk for cheap, but what types of items does the school need that is small enough to be carried in a suitcase?

My dentist will donate a handful of new toothbrushes, but is this something they could use, or would even want?

What about basic first aid supplies?

Thanks Susan...I will do a break out topic on this with more info.

Time to fire up this thread again!

So far I am taking pencils, spiral notebooks, basic first aid supplies, @20 new toothbrushes, staples, crayons, blue ink pens, highlighters, report folders, clipboard....... a general mix of stuff.

All of this is specifically because I can take a free second suitcase, so I'll even donate the bag.

If you have any space in your luggage at all, consider bringing something to donate to the local school. They will accept cash, but then they must pay local taxes on the purchases.

As you exit the Dominica airport thru Customs, just say you have DIVE GEAR, since they will make you pay a tax, even if you say you have donations for a local school.
