Tips for Safe and Happy Online Shopping
Shared from Dallas, TX BetterBusinessBureau- More than 40 percent of Americans are expected to shop on the Internet this holiday, spending almost $145 billion online, according to a poll by retail analysts NPD Group. That's a 27 percent jump from 2003, according to analysts at Forrester Research.
Shopping on the Web is convenient, however, consumers must also be aware of the potential for online fraud, and should take steps to protect themselves when shopping online.
Warnings about Internet fraud and identity theft may make some consumers reluctant to shop online, but Visa USA and the Better Business Bureau say consumers can shop online with confidence - if they follow a few simple guidelines.
Ten Tips for Safer Online Shopping
1. Visa and the Better Business Bureau have compiled a list of tips for consumers to protect themselves while shopping online this holiday season:
2. Shop only at Internet merchants you know and trust. If in doubt check with the Better Business Bureau (www.bbb.org).
3. Beware of emails offering cut-rate prices on popular toys, software or other gifts; if the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
4. If you receive an unsolicited email from an Internet merchant, don't click on the links within it. Instead, locate the merchant's Web site address through a reputable search engine.
5. Check Internet merchants' refund policies; some merchants set a deadline for returns or charge a fee to accept returned merchandise.
6. Pay with a credit or debit card; for extra protection enroll your card in anti-fraud programs like Verified by Visa.
7. Never share your passwords with anyone, and use different passwords for different Web sites.
8. Protect your private information. When shopping online, look for the merchant's Web site privacy policy and never provide your Social Security number, birth date, or mother's maiden name.
9. Ensure your computer has the latest anti-virus software installed before shopping online.
10. Always print and save the confirmation page when completing an online purchase.
11. Don't wait for paper statements. Check your credit card and bank statements for suspicious activity by either calling your bank or visiting your financial institution's Web site.
