What are some of the best ways to deal with long hair when diving (when most dives will be in the warmer waters)?

What hair ties are best for this?

What I've seen:
- chin strap beanie
- hood (is this worn in warm water?)
- French braid (which I can't do worth a damn)
- braided pony tail under mask strap (tried this and it still seemed to be a mess - the hairs on top of my head don't get caught in the ponytail/braid)
- multi-stage pony into a braided bun (Tried this with some success during the dive, but man oh man taking it out with the hair ties I had 😳 ouch! Which brings me to)

Hair ties:
I've changed all my hair ties for above water use to silk ties - so underwater use I'm at a loss. What brand(s) work well with wet hair and pull/tear hair the least?

Appreciate any info you can share! Thanks!

I'm tender headed and have very long hair (down to my behind) and I too have struggled with this but I've got a solution that works well for me. I usually will do pigtail braids and then stuff them into a MESH skull cap like this or this. This keeps all baby hairs under control and keeps my braids from wrapping around my tank. It's important that your skull cap has a Full MESH top so the bubbles can escape, otherwise the bubbles will pull it off your head. And the mesh needs to be fairly open, otherwise you can take scissors and cut little slits to open it up a bit more. Also, you can use bobby pins to keep little fly aways in place. For hair ties, I use small rubber hair ties. This works well because it's just the pigtail braid that is being secured. If you are putting all of your hair in a hair tie, I'd use one that is wrapped like this.

I don't do french braids of any kind because my mask makes them move around on my head.

I've tried the lycra buff & doo rags and those come right off my head.

I've tried the chin strap caps and they stay on but aren't as comfortable for me.

Just cut my hair, but when it was long, waist length, I braided it and put umder a doo cap.  Mostly styed in place, but I like the mesh underneath the cap idea.

also if you use conditioner in your braids they stay in place longer.......

Good luck, will be interested in more responses  ;)

Yes, conditioner in the braids helps a lot! Also, the mesh is built into the top of the skull cap (not underneath the cap). So do be sure to put sunscreen on any part lines in your hair.
