Laura,

I think we'll have fun diving the springs.

I have one thing to say about knees: design flaw. Seems like they're the weak link in many otherwise strong and healthy bodies. After a couple injuries I have a bad knee and a downright naughty one, and like you, Laura, spend time at the gym trying to work all the muscle groups around them to try to prevent having a third ACL replacement surgery (2 knees - 3 ACLs = fuzzy math). Sounds like you're taking a smart approach by balancing your workout. Since your injury is different from mine perhaps this won't apply, but I find bike riding does wonders for both Bad and Naughty. Since you've got more of a grinding thing going on, however, that may not be good. Yoga is also helping over time.

Good luck!

Thanks lady!

I agree with you on the design flaw....women have it worse because our wider hips create more stress than the guys.

I'm lucky, never had to have surgery. I feel for you, girl, I've heard that is rough...

Cycling is okay as long as I get the seat height right. I tried yoga once and it just wasn't for me... it looks cool, but I felt so awkward I could not stop laughing long enough to hold a pose...

For cardio, I either walk, or do low impact aerobics. I have these Jane Fonda tapes left over from the 80's - the costumes are pretty cheesey, but it's a good, safe, workout ....make me want to grow back my mulllet, though (HA HA!!)

take care
Laura

well...getting there IS half the fun..heh heh!

To put it in perspective...

1) Central Ohio tends to be very grey and rainy a lot, so the idea of just being in the sun is exciting.

2) I have not had a real vacation in almost 2 years

3) I have always wanted to dive the springs and I finally am getting the opportunity

4) I cannot wait to do some "real diving" a.k.a. diving where you can actually see stuff!

So, based on all that, I am chomping at the bit in anticipation.....

Later,
Laura

I couldn't agree with you more on all of your points, Maus. And Laura, I completely relate to your situation as well. I've had two ligament repairs, a cartilage removal, then a reconstruction. Probably looking at another outpatient one this year just to clean it up a bit.

Biking is indeed great as it builds a lot of the muscle, but I've found that mountain biking tends to keep it stronger than road biking. As far as your seat height issue, go get your bike fitted to you - any good bike store should be able to help you. They measure every part of your body and will make adjustments or swap out parts (cranks, stems, etc.) so that you are properly positioned. It will probably run you about $75 to get it done but it is money well spent.

I do still run, though only about three times a week because my body can't take the abuse any more.

I've tried the Glucosamine thing for about six months in the past and it did absolutely nothing for me but I've heard others say good things about it.

Thanks for the info. Sorry to hear about your knee prob's. Mine's not really THAT bad, as long as I watch it....

I did try the Glucosomine, I didn't really notice a difference, and it is a bit expensive. Perhaps I will give it another try....

Hang in there....
