My DAN Alert Diver arrived yesterday and page 19 is about SD.com's trip to Coz and the need to carry insurance, don't leave home without it!

Yes we did it again....national exposure for our little venture!!!

I am going to post the article in the Announcements section but since you opened a thread here...people can discuss it!! Thanks!!!

Of course our own Scott aka DiveScoop wrote the article and did a fantastic job with it as well!! In fact you rarely get exposure like that but I REALLY did make that quote that first night when I was distraught over a diver being hurt but relieved he had insurance. And I was begging people to get it as it was cheap at the price. Most did not know you could get it online at www.DiversAlertNetwork.org and that's why 4 people signed up in the hotel lobby that night....including Todd! And thank goodness he did! Its a short trip from sanity to insanity and I can assure you that I'd make it in record time if Todd or anyone had gotten hurt and did NOT have insurance. In fact it was at that moment that I was thinking out loud and said that I normally require DAN insurance for my NC trips but had made it optional for the first singles trip but would now require it on ALL future trips I ran!

And just a point of clarification....I prefer DAN insurance however I will accept any insurance you have that is equal or better!
Thanks again for noticing!!! I'm glad you are reading such a great publication!!

I read that article as well (Ok, before I pulled out to dive Friday, but that is another issue.).

My OW class convinced me of the value of that insurance. The instructor told of a trip in the South Pacific where they had to send a chopper. The chopper wouldn't even warm up to leave the helipad until they had an insurance number. Don't EVEN ask the cost of that chopper in addition to the chamber treatment.

I don't dive without my DAN card. It's what I've got in my wallet! (As the nasty pirates go away)

The topic of insurance comes up yearly at my club's general meeting. Since we dive in the St. Lawrence River, some of the sites are technically on the U.S. side so diving insurance is strongly recommended. We have medicare in Ontario so the government picks up the tab. It's easy to forget that even though we're diving "locally", we could be transported to a US medical facility where we're NOT covered.

Some of us dinosaurs remember the days before DAN insurance. It's much better now. Everyone should have DAN insurance.

There was also a long thread going about that trip on Scubadiving.com's bb a few days ago after someone put in a plug for Red, Wet and Blue. :diver:

For those that don't know...my first diving venture was and still is RedWetandBlueDiving.com specializing in Wreck and Shark diving! JPDiver on that other board is a pretty ardent fan of my trips and you'll see him again this year on one or more of my NC trips! :diver:

Everyone should have DAN insurance.

I wholeheartedly agree with that statement, Walter...

Yes of course it does! DAN is based in the Raleigh Durham area hence my affinity for them from my WreckDiving days!!! -ww

My comments in the "Timmy's in the well" thread.

Yea, I did read that article by Scott. That guy was my assigned roommate, BTW. A very thoughtful, conservative and careful diver. I dove with him the first two days. He states it well in the article that even with proper dive profile, ascent rate, and focus, people can get bent. The individual's summary was that he was tired, and probably a little dehydrated. All summarized in our threads to date. He is OK now, and I look forward to diving with him again. Another point made in the article. DAN insurance is very important. Hey WW, I agree with your quote in the article stating DAN insurance is mandatory for SD.com trips.

As Todd (in the article) said "DAN has earned a life member, since they ...have saved me more money than I can pay back in a lifetime" (following 7 chamber hours at $800/ hr). The most important quote in my opinion was "I think I might not have gone to the chamber if not for DAN". There is another discussion in that edition of Alert Diver about the time interval from recognition of possible DCS symptoms, through the denial phase, to the "I guess I should go this checked out" phase. As Todd said, having DAN coverage takes away any financial disincentive to getting checked out.
OK, I'll stop. I think you get my drift on my feelings about having diving insurance./ And did you know that there is a bill in the US legislature right now to make our normal insurance cover "hazardous activities" like scuba and sky diving?

Message? Have diving insurance. A surgeon at work today told me that one of his partner's father fell in Puerto Rico and broke a leg. The son/ orthopedist is trying to coordinate fixed wing evac for his father. THe quotes he has received are $43,000. to fly his father to the US.
Diving; My zen space.
