My best friend lives in London and the very first thing that I did this morning when I heard was to contact her. Thankfully, she was nowhere near the bombings.
I am sure that I speak for everyone on this board in sending out my sincerest thoughts for support along with my heartfelt condolences.

I was in London on September 11, 2001. While I won't bother recounting the emotions I felt that day, the salient point is that I wound up stuck in London due to airport closures, etc.
I remained in London for 5 days before continuing my trip into Europe. During those 5 days, I've never witnessed such an outpouring of emotion and support from one nation's people to another. Strangers, upon discovering I was American, would openly and sorrowfully express their sympathies to me, even though I didn't directly know anyone who was killed in the 9/11 attacks.
I went to a ceremonial Changing of the Guard event at Buckingham Palace, in which the Guard performed a memorial service for those who died in the attacks. They played a variety of American patriotic songs, including the US National Anthem, which was the first time in history that had happened.
The purpose of sharing this little story is that the people of London reached out to me, and to all Americans, in our darkest time and offered us their hearts and prayers.
I hope we, as individuals, and as a nation, will return the favor with such sincerity.
My British friends: you have my deepest gratitude for your friendship, and you have my most sincere prayers for your loss, your leaders, and your wonderful spirit.

Upon hearing the news I immediately e-mailed a dive friend who lives there. I met her in Thailand several years ago, and was concerned that she, her BF, friends and family were all OK.
It turned out Mo had left for work late and missed her train... at one of the stations affected by the blasts. She escaped possible harm, or worse. I don't think I'll criticize another woman who is late for a date because she is touching up her makeup (or any other "excuse"). It might be the Almighty's way of ensuring I don't get involved in something like this!
Our thoughts go out to those in London and elsewhere in the world.
