On a joint military exercise an English soldier, an American solider, and a Russian soldier found themselves sharing a tent while on a military exercise and the conversation turned towards how well fed each of them was.

"In the Russian army we get 2000 calories of food a day" said the Russian.

"Well," said the Englishman, "in the British army we are given 4000 calories of food a day."

"That's nothing," said the American, "in the US army we get 8000 calories of food a day."

At this the Russian got very annoyed. "Nonsense," he said, "how could one man eat so much cabbage?"

OK, lets make a deal. If you stop telling me how to dive, I'll stop going down to the bus station at 2am to slap d***s out of your mouth.

Ok, how many calories in this (vintage) field chow? For extra bonus points, try to guess the year.

That doesn't resemble the chow at any Marine Corp chow hall.
Of course it would be tough to stay a lean mean fighting machine with
dinner like that on a daily basis.

Actually there are lots of fresh fruit and veggies in the picture. Some bread with minimal processing...and foods that seem to be light on meat but heavy on complex carbs. So in reality...you could eat this meal and be quite healthy as well as stay lean...especially if you were active duty or just active! :lmao:

Not military humor but a view of military logic, Lakehurst NAS got the Presidents award for the best Navy base in the world, a few months latter the galley which is Navy speak for chow hall was closed because not enough people were eating there.
Where do they eat now? McDonalds, Burger King, Bruces BBQ and some Pizza places in town.

You win! Right on for the year, (Ft. Polk, LA, summer 1972) probably about right for the calories. The scan didn't come out real clear, but that's a heaping plate of a turkey drum, mashed taters and gravy, and a few veggies. Also not visible are lots of those pesky gnats all trying to get their share. The skinny 19yo drooling over it is of course yours truly.

Well, not JUST about food, but humorous none the less. Need to read all the way to the end.

Letter from a farm kid, now at Paris Island Marine Corps recruit depot:
Dear Ma and Pa:
I am well. Hope you are. Tell Brother Walt and Brother Elmer the Marine
Corps beats working for old man Minch by a mile. Tell them to join up quick
before maybe all of the places are filled.
I was restless at first because you got to stay in bed till nearly 6 am,
but am getting so I like to sleep late. Tell Walt and Elmer all you do
before breakfast is smooth your cot and shine some things. No hogs to slop,
feed to pitch, mash to mix, wood to split, fire to lay. Practically
nothing. Men got to shave but it is not so bad, there's warm water.
Breakfast is strong on trimmings like fruit juice, cereal, eggs, bacon,
etc., but kind of weak on chops, potatoes, ham, steak, fried eggplant, pie
and other regular food, but tell Walt and Elmer you can always sit by the
two city boys that live on coffee. Their food plus yours holds you till
noon when you get fed again. It's no wonder these city boys can't walk
much.
We go on "route marches", which the platoon sergeant says are long walks to
harden us. If he thinks so, it's not my place to tell him different. A
"route march" is about as far as to our mailbox at home. Then the city guys
get sore feet and we all ride back in trucks.
The country is nice but awful flat. The sergeant is like a school teacher.
He nags a lot. The Captain is like the school board. Majors and Colonels
just ride around and frown. They don't bother you none.
This next will kill Walt and Elmer with laughing. I keep getting medals for
shooting. I don't know why. The bulls-eye is near as big as a chipmunk head
and don't move, and it ain't shooting at you like the Higgett boys at home.
All you got to do is lie there all comfortable and hit it. You don't even
load your own cartridges. They come in boxes.
Then we have what they call hand-to hand combat training. You get to
wrestle with them city boys. I have to be real careful though, they break
real easy. It ain't like fighting with that ole bull at home. I'm about the
best they got in this except for that Tug Jordan from over in Silver Lake.
I only beat him once. He joined up the same time as me, but I'm only 5'6"
and 130 pounds, and he's 6'8" and weighs near 300 pounds dry.
Be sure to tell Walt and Elmer to hurry and join before other fellers get
onto this setup and come stampeding in.
Your loving daughter,
Gail

Believe it or don't, it was a combination of the helmets, uniforms and your haircut that gave it away for me...it was in the early-to-mid 70s that I remember starting to see that mock Mohawk in conjunction with the WWII style helmet still in use.
