I'm taking a wreck class next week (so that I can join you all in NC later). Standard equipment for the class is a reel and a lift bag. What you need for a class is often VERY different from what you need in real life if you're going to continue on enjoying that specialty. What size/brand of each do you recommend? As an aside, I do EVENTUALLY intend on coming out to Florida and taking a cave class, but that's not likely to be until next year. My instructor uses a Manta 600 ft reel and a 50# bag but I don't know if this would be right for me. Just trollin' for opinions here.

Also, anyone know where I can find a FRONT-ZIP 3 mil or 3/2 full suit? Do these manufacturers think that all of the folks who buy these are surfers? What gives? I use the front zipper to moderate my temperature while I'm diving and unless I manage to grow a second elbow on my arm anytime soon that ain't happenin' with a back-zip.

Thanks in advance,
Jamie

Thanks for the suggestion. I do have a question, though: how true does their sizing run? The reason I ask is that based on their chart http://www.atlaninc....-sizechart.html the waist is going to be way too big (I'm 33-34"). I'm 6'1" and 200#, so the rest seems to be OK.

Also, I can't find pricing anywhere.

You'll probably have to call or e-mail for pricing. I don't know about their standard sizes. I had to get a custom suit due to my height.
You could probably get a front zip from any wetsuit manufacturer that handles custom suits. How about Liquidfit?

Thanks for the suggestions. I'm trying to get away from a custom 3 mil suit because I'd likely only use it one or two vacations a year.

Ask your instructor. I'd hate for you to buy a reel and not be able to use it in class. I'd caution against the rachetted reels. 600 ft seems like overkill. Unless you're planning major penetrations, 50 - 100 ft should be plenty. I teach a wreck class, I have 300 ft and there's only one wreck where I've ever needed that much line. It's better to have a reel that's not jammed full of line. A full reel is just too hard to use, especially when you're beginning.

Practice laying line dry. After you have the hang of it, then practice underwater.
No single raindrop believes it is responsible for the flood.

I've never had a Wreck Class, but then - we don't really do penatrations on the NC dives, much. The main things I carry that I might not otherwise:

Gloves - that I don't mind snagging on the wreck;

Nail bar - in case I want to pry something loose, painted yellow with enamel in case I lose it;

Jon Line - in case the deco line is rough;

2 F-lights, 2 Masks, 2 S-Sausages, 2 Computers.

I'm bringing my 7 mil in Oct this year; I dove with a 3 mil over a 1 mil w.o. a beanie and was cold by the end of the last dive. I'll try the 3+1+beanie first, but I'll have the heavy suit handy.
