I was there about 5 years ago. Cairns is where I tried diving for the first time. My ex-wife and I stayed at a Marriott 1/2 way between Cairns and Port Douglas. If I remember right there was a bus that took us from the hotel to Cairns so no need to rent a car if you don't want to. There was also a daily boat that takes you out to the Great Barrier Reef. I don't know if you can rent your gear or not, but one would assume that you can.
The one thing I would recommend is the rainforest tour. It's great. We got to see all kinds of cool stuff during the tour.
As for beer. Lets just say that they have some of the best beer in the world (at least in my opinion). Fosters is about the worst one that they have, so be sure to try the other ones.
Glad to hear all is well with you...

Fosters? Nobody in Oz drinks that stuff!
Oh... in Queensland they usually serve XXXX beer... I hear it's because they can't sell it under the name "Cr@p" (I don't drink beer so I cannot comment any further.)

Well Tooleys, Crown and Hahn are my to favorites. I made the mistake one trip of my first day in Australia of going out with the local guys from the office (it was a Friday thank god) and trying to keep up with them beer for beer. Oh I felt so bad the next day...
So since you don't drink beer. What do you drink?

Oh dear, you made the mistake of trying ot keep up with a local. You do realise they probably felt as bad as you but didn't let on.
Thank you for the compliment though. We like think we make a good drop.
I always though Queenslanders called there local beer XXXX because they couldn't spell BEER.
