AOL listens to its customers...well for a short period of time.

I don't think so, they've started spamming us. I've complained, nothing's happened. Very soon, I'll let them listen to the door slam as I switch ISPs.

I was about to ask why people stay with them

I have SBC and don't have an issue with spam or SD emails coming to my email address

Scott if it were easy it would have been done by now.

My suggestion while you wait (and grow old as you have pined earlier) is to either check into the site more frequently so you'll see what you are missing or set up a Hotmail or Yahoo free account and check it or pay a few bucks and have the messages from your new Yahoo or Hotmail account forward to your AOL. Yes it is a work around but one that you can implement today and be up and running immediately.

Since we've been working on this for quite some time and there is no permanent solution in sight, it appears for all the foreseeable future, that these are your best options.

I've also been with them since '95 and I really don't want to deal with changing e-mail addresses either, but when then brag about eliminating spam and even filing lawsuits against spammers and then turn around and suddenly become the biggest spammer on the planet, that's the final straw. I've already been dealing with aol locking up my entire computer and dropping me off line at the worst possible times. I am sick of them. Like most large companies, they have become very unresponsive to consumers. In '95, when we first subscribed, they were a fairly small company, now they've become a giant. Smaller companies are usually better, IMO.

I use Juno and wouldn't say that they are any better!! Truth is, these companies can advertise all they want about how they cut this stuff out, but you have to believe that by allowing it to go through, there is a revenue stream attached somewhere, after all got to make the suits on Wall Street happy!! :thankyou:

The e-mail failure appears to be more widespread than just those bound for AOL users. Several test notifications I sent yesterday and today have yet to reach their recipients. So....

I changed the method the forums use to send the various notifications at 5:15pm EDT today. Immediately after that I initiated several test notifications and each were successfully received by the recipients.

Please let me know if you still are not receiving notifications for either PMs or Thread update notifications AFTER 5:15pm EDT June 28, 2006.

** AOL Users - please let me know if they end up in your spam folder as well.

George

Yep, it was most assuredly an issue with AOL and a couple of other ISPs 'cos the rest of us were continuing to get notifications the whole time.

One of the header fields in the e-mail was returning an improper sender authentication, which AOL *must* be flagging as a 'spam sender' signature, so they were blocking it. Doing that catches some of the folks trying to sell you Viagra, but it also blocks anything that's not *perfect*. Spamhaus.org was also filtering on the same invalid header information, from what I can see, so any ISP using their block list would have dropped our notifications, as well.

AOL's tech support kiddies don't understand what they were filtering on, which means you'll never see e-mail from a 'less than perfect' e-mail server. Personally, I'd rather do all of the filtering on my end so I know what's going in the trashcan.

The change George did uses a different e-mail server on our end (with slightly different header information), and apparently AOL (and Spamhaus?) likes the headers from the SMTP server better.

Of course it does. They claim to be filtering all spam, yet they are spamming us with an ad on each and every e-mail we receive.

Wow. You have to *pay* for the pleasure of unsolicited advertising in your e-mail? :hiya: I imagine that must be having a dramatic effect on their membership! I would't put up with that (expletive deleted) on anything but a free e-mail account. Heck, even my freebie Yahoo! e-mail account doesn't pull that.

Why is it that I keep wanting to call them 'yay-hoo' instead of 'yaw-hoo'? :cool1:

:cool1: Stan I pay $19.99 a month for DSL thru AOL....I have not been getting spammed by AOL...Just some pop up windows over the last month...that now have stopped...overall I am happy with the service...and as long as I get notifications from this board...I will be on it more.....I do not and have not had problems with other similar boards and their notifications.....I am sure I could find another ISP with similar pricing....But being I am not a computer Geek...and I do not have the hours to do all the research...and then to set up another service and learn it :hiya: ....Being AOL works with everyone else...I'll stay put.

How'd you get aol to stop spamming you? They started putting ads on every e-mail I received on 6/12. I immediately complained, but the practice is continuing.
