SD'S FLORIDA DIVE OF THE MONTH - JULY 2006

SATURDAY 07/22/06

So Florida Diving Headquarters

101 North Riverside Drive
Pompano Beach , Fl 33062

Located just north of Atlantic Blvd and immediately east of the Intercoatal
East of US1 and West of A1A
www.southfloridadiving.com There is a map on the "Locations" tab.
(800) 771-DIVE (3483)

Rodeo 25 Wreck (80-125 ft) and a drift dive on a reef (40-60 ft)
The Rodeo is a 215 ft Dutch freighter, sunk, upright in May 1990, by the Pompano Beach Fishing Rodeo. After Hurricane Andrew and 11 years of corrosion, the hull is still intact. (note it was still intact in 2001 - I've never been on it so I don't know if this is true today.)However recently the bow mast has collapsed, laying off to the west. Barracuda, grouper, amberjack, and other schools of fish frequent this wreck. Occasionally bull sharks are seen in the distance. Since this is a deep dive you will need AOW or proof of experience at this depth in the ocean.

Boat Update - we will be on the Aqua View a 45 ft catamaran. This vessel is equipped with side ladders which are easy to use even in the roughest seas. There are five exits, which make it easier to enter the water. Other amenities include a glassbottom viewing window, two freshwater showers, freshwater rinse barrel, clean spacious bathroom, stereo system and a video monitor to view videos or digital images after the dive. Beverages, fresh fruit and cookies are included on all trips.

COST:
2 Tank Dive is $45 All Diving Fees are to be paid to SingleDivers.com.

Tank Rental - 80 AL Air are $9 or Nitrox (32 EAN) $13.50
Air Fill = $4, Nixtrox = $9
If you need weight belt and weight it is $3, but if you only need weight it is free

WHO are the lucky SDer's sharing some great diving:

1. Jill aka nextariel - pd
2. Dave aka Dave Bush - no tanks
3. Joe aka JoeScuba - 2 nitrox - pd
4.

Saturday:
8:00 AM Check in South Florida Diving Headquarters window on the side of the building next to the boats

A question was raised about the boats having sun cover/ tops and here is a link to the boats. We are currently booked on the small 12 passenger boat but it does not have dive deck sun coverage. There is space on the other boats for our group...I've asked Jill to let me know if we need to change our reservation to one of the other boats!

This sounds like a great dive...very cool wreck and then a drift reef dive afterwards!

These spots are very nice indeed. BTW, if you click on the green boat at the top of the web page on the right, that is the smaller boat without the sun protection.

I beleive that this wreck is at 130 feet to the bottom. Not sure where the relief starts on it. I think Jill knows but she won't be online until later this evening.

But if you have an AOW card, you're good to go?

I need to see if I can just do AOW in July so this kind of thing wil no longer be an issue.

dove the Rodeo a few months ago.
deck is twisted up and collapsed and the superstructure is listing almost 45 degrees to starboard curtesy of Wilma
125' to the sand. superstructure is 80' at the highest but its leaning to one side. id plan on going to at least 100' on this one.
still a great dive though

Thanks for the update. I have never been on the wreck, but it looked interesting on their website.

I would really like to make this trip since I'm not going to be able to dive FL Keys for July 4th as planned. If you could tell me if my AOW and 1 logged dive to 100 ft. will suffice, and where I could spend the night, I'll try to go! I love drift dives! :flirt:

Of course, to meet you, Jill, would be the best reason to make the trip! :P

can't make the day dives due to work obligations july 22. however, if a night dive is planned or becomes a reality i would love to join up. if this group is diving sunday july 23 i would be sure to attend.. i have dove with this outfit and have been to this wreck a few times.

The boat is asking for AOW - sending PM. It will be great to meet you whether it is FL or Roatan.
