YESAre you saying that Win7pro runs XP software? All of it?
See here on the Win 7 version comparison page.
I know CS4 and LR2 will work, I just got the Win7 Pro upgrade disc for a friend who was using the trial version of Win 7 ultimate, no problem with using those programs on Win 7 Pro.

You can get a version of Win7 with an XP partition so you can run XP software
I have Win7 Home Premium and love it!
Me too! But am gonna upgrade to Pro so I can use my CS4 and LR2 programs (which are XP versions)

Doesn't affect my decision to buy a Mac, mind.

my current laptop had Vista originally, which I hated; I really like Win7 even though I didn't go for the upgraded version that has the XP partition

If it's not too expensive I shall buy it, assuming it will go onto this awful Vista computer I'm using. There are sorts of things I hate about Vista and I suspect several will carry through to "7", but my biggest beef is that I can't run much of my XP software and this will (apparently?) solve that. But how much is it?

You should research your decision by using the microsoft.com site for win 7.
My friend upgraded his Vista X64 machine, and loves it. I am using a X64 Vaio build with win7 home, soon to be pro.
What exactly about Vista do you hate, except that you were unable to use your XP software????

The only software issue I ran into was a geeky port of a unix networking utility (winmtr) wasn't working, but then, I tend to keep my software up-to-date.
