REEF SURVEY DIVE DAY
OWENS BEACH, Tacoma, WA
SATURDAY, OCTOBER 28th
Details to be announced

Janna Nichols (the other half of Pacific NW Scuba) is an amazing Fish and Invertebrate ID instructor. As such, she started a Pacific NW Critter Watchers group in conjunction with her REEF surveying work. Pacific NW Critter Watchers group's mission is to: Put Fun into Critter Watching and Promote Critter Surveying in the PNW. They also conduct quarterly survey dive days and I thought it might be a great opportunity for Single Divers to join forces on their next dive day!

If you have never gone fish surveying before, you can learn more starting with Janna's Quick Start REEF Surveying Guide.

So why join a REEF Survey Dive Day?

Improve your ID skills by being able to discuss what you've seen with more experienced folks
Contribute to REEF's data collection by:
  • obtaining a strong sample from individual sites
  • focusing efforts on particular sites of interest
  • defining the minimum number of surveys for the data to be really useful and the number of surveys at which the statistics stabilize
OH, AND IT'S FUN!

So just how good are your PNW ID skills? :cool2:

Click here to take the REEF PNW Invertebrate Quiz

Who's planning on attending:
1. Wylerbear (Georgia)
2. REEF Diver (Valerie)
3. gis_gal (Colleen)
4. coachrenz (Tim)

I have been wanting to do this but missed the count at Hood Canal earlier this year.

Count me in.

heheh...

If it's stuck to a Rock = It's an Anemone
If it's Crawling on the bottom = It's a Crab
If it's Swimming in the Water = It's a Fish....

:)

If you feel the need, and I certainly hope you (Potential Students) do..
To get past the above Critter ID, then I would strongly advise to take the class...
It doesn't take much to get past the above ID, and what the "Heck", you will have fun...
Nicolle always seems to find the critters.. Octo, Wolfies etc......

Have fun..

Aside from the 'Krappie Photo" note the 3 "White Tea Cups"... ie Suckers...
See what I mean?? Nicolle and The Wench.

So everyone knows, a Fish ID class or certification is not required to join this event. You are more than welcome to seek out a Fish ID class in advance of this dive day, but you certainly don't need to.

For those joining us this upcoming Saturday (Cove 2 on 8/19), we will have two Level 5 REEF experts (Wylerbear and REEF Diver) joining us. They are great resources and can assist in helping you identify what you saw. They, as well as myself, also typically travel with Fish and Invertebrate ID books. I will have mine on site for reference and use.

And I still laugh, fbp, at your fabulous brief critter ID method!! :P

Owens Beach is an interesting choice for a fish count site :P

Maybe someone will hang around later for a Sixgill count and I'll volunteer for that :lmao:

REEF surveys are less about counting, per se, and more about simply recording the species observed on the dive. It's fairly easy! I would like to check off the box for BIG GREY FISH WITH TEETH, so I'd be up for sticking around catching a later in the day dive!

We'll try to make sure the quantity box is filled in with more than 1 :P

I checked in with REEF Diver (Valerie) and Wylerbear (Georgia), who are leading this REEF quarterly dive. They would really enjoy having PNW SD divers join them for the dives.

And it is Halloween weekend....perhaps we need costumes... :birthday:

I will come as a pink finned diver. :P

I am also interested in sticking around for another later dive.

Should we plan on another sleepover?

Yippy... I will have a streaking buddy this time.. :P
I could drink a few more of those fabulous margaritas.

I guess GG's B & B is open once again.
Not a fancy place but the drinks and stories are always top grade.

It's all good! I just bring a big black marker - so if you see a fish with a check mark, it's already been counted. :D

You aren't required to do any counting. Thos that can, will. Joining REEF for dives will simply give us access to some really great briefings, fish ID info/books, fish ID discussion, and more.
