More about Belize...an unspoiled mystery!

Few places on earth remain as beautifully unspoiled as Belize. No where else does the enchantment of the Caribbean come more magically alive and the natural landscape and seascape promise so much every moment. In Belize, diversity is the key to adventure. In only a few memorable days you can time-travel over 2000 years…place-travel everything from the mountains and jungles to 400-foot deep undersea caverns.

You will first touch down into this extraordinary country on the mainland, not far from the Belize Zoo. (The well-cared-for Inhabitants of this unusual outdoor zoo are an interesting representation of the exotic wildlife abounding throughout the country-Well worth a visit.)

Most first-time visitors are anxious to head east to the sparkling clear waters of the Caribbean and the palm fingered, white sand beaches of the cayes (islands) for which Belize is so well known. But remember, in Belize, there’s always a choice: diving, swimming and fishing in the cayes and atolls seaward – mountains, jungle expeditions, Maya ruins, river fishing and more, inland.

BELIZE FACTS

Topography: Belize is located on the east cost of Central America on the Caribbean Sea. Its 8,866 square mile area is bordered by Mexico on the north and Guatemala on the west and south. Elevation ranges from the sea level to almost 400 feet in the Maya Mountains inland. Belize has 3 of the Western Hemisphere’s four atolls and the second largest barrier reef in the world – 176 miles of coral running parallel to its entire coastline.

Climate: Average annual temperature of this subtropical country is about 80 degrees, with prevailing tradewinds from the Caribbean.

Population: approximately 250,000

Language: The official and most spoken language is English; Spanish is secondary.

Government: Belize is independent with democratically elected parliamentary government and is a British Commonwealth Member.

Time: Central Standard Time. Belize does not observe Daylight Savings Time

Currency Exchange: Local Currency is the Belize dollar (BZ). 1 US dollar is worth 2 BZ dollars.

Electrical Provisons: Electrical service is 100 volts AC – same as U.S.

Water: Drinking water is potable meaning you can safely drink the water.

BELIZE BASICS

Communications:

All communications such as direct dial telephone, fax and e-mail are available.

Entry requirements:

A valid passport is required to enter. No visas are required from the United States, United Kingdom and most Caribbean countries. Other countries require visas. (Have your travel agent check). Visitors are allowed a one-month stay without requesting an extension.

Customs:

Residents of the US are allowed a $400.00 per person duty free tax exemption. Citizens 21 years or older can return with one quart of duty-free and 200 cigarettes. WARNING: There are certain items with which one is not allowed to leave Belize. Attempting to do so will most likely result in the items being confiscated and possible incarceration for the processor. These include: Pre-Columbian articles, marine products unless approved by the Fisheries department, and unprocessed coral or turtle shells. It is illegal to take firearms or ammunition into or out of Belize.

Taxes

Departure Tax There is a required Departure Tax of $20 (US), inclusive of a $1.25 (US) security tax plus a $3.75 (US) Protected Areas Conservation Trust (PACT) fee. Subject to change.

Please look at the first post and check to see if I have you listed for Nitox if you want it...and while you are at it please verify the first post is accurate! We have several people helping to update the threads now and so we may have missed a detail or two. Thanks for you help...kamala
