One more thread borne from the depths of my curiosity...

What was the best gift you ever received and why?

Do you prefer thoughtful or expensive gifts...?

Because of your wording "the gift that keeps on giving" I was expecting a poll about venereal diseases.!

I'm assuming you are speaking of a gift from a significant other or someone you are dating. In that case, I vote for the weekend getaway since it involves the quality time together plus distinct memories that I can hold onto forever.

I voted for the getaway weekend as well

I think alot of the choices really depend on where you are in your relationship and the context of which they are given; a getaway weekend is great if you're in a long distance relationship.

I think flowers are great too; I really like having fresh flowers in my house, it just spruces everything up, plus everytime I look at them, I think of the guy who sent them to me :)

My favorite gift of all time was a box of Japanese maple leaves. An old friend selected them from the tree I planted at his first house years ago. It brought back a lot of memories of time spent together even though our lives went in different directions. Simple, inexpensive things with a lot of thoughts behind them score a lot more points than jewelry or expensive gifts like a customized Harley...or a new dive computer I just got for my birthday.

Quality time, for sure. There seems to be so little of it lately that whatever quality time can be scrounged is a precious commodity. There's just nothing like curling up on the couch together after a day's work and snuggling while we watch a movie, or just talk about whatever happens to come to mind.

It's just too bad that one or the other of us has to fly 5,000 miles to do that... :)

Cheers!

Jim

I voted for the weekend getaway too. It gives you quality time together in a relaxed environment.

Also like Que said, thoughtful, creative gifts are tops too. You dont have to spend alot of money to give a thoughtful gift.

It'd be nice to see the split of what the guys chose versus what the ladies chose.

I chose the quality time.

The nicest gift I've ever gotten was someone else's love. I can't say it was always well received, but in retrospect it was nice. Then there have been those loves that have lasted a lifetime (or a reasonable fraction of one at least). In those cases, small thoughtful gifts are much more important... I can get the big ones that I really need.

Since I'm not in a relationship at this time (duh, that's why I'm here), I'll settle for a weekend getaway with the proper (or better yet, improper!) stranger and lots of mutually satisfying mating behavior!

Ok quick but important thought on this....

ANY gift that requires thought and effort is a great gift. Any gift that creates a memory is even better. Combine the two and you have the most incredible gift you can give someone.

Note I did not say 'expensive' nor that you have to 'spend lots of money'. Creating value and fun and enjoyment...the elements of a wonderful memory will last a lifetime....things go away quickly and only last a few moments.

As for a weekend getaway...I think it should be reserved for when you've REALLY gotten to know each other via email, phone, etc. It should be VERY special...not just a way to hang out together. It should allow for chemistry to REALLY happen if it exists and that you'll know when you've been talking for hours on the phone to each other...sending numerous emails daily and soon want to start the day talking to each other and end the day talking to each other. THEN...you should have a great getaway weekend... oh yes...no chaperones...it won't be that special if others are around that know you! :respect:

I agree with the Wench!!! A weekend getaway would be fantastic...great memories, great company, what more could a girl ask for! The best gift I ever recieved was my chihuahua Paco for my 29th birthday.
