True story:  the first time I got called "sir" was at the grocery.  I turned around to see if he was talking to someone behind me because I knew he couldn't be talking to me!  That was a sad day....

Ah, I can relate, Jamie. The sadest part about that first time (being called ma'am, not sir) was that it was so very long ago...

The worst? Being called ma'am at the ripe old age of 18---by a 22 year old!! Boy did that suck! (I think my Navy uniform might have had something to do with it but that hardly mattered at the time!)

I have always thought Ma'am, Sir etc. depended a lot on the speakers attitude. I have even been OK with 'Little Lady', because I realized that that was just his way of speaking. On the other hand, if someone said it with even the slightest lear, I would be spitting mad.

Why, I demand that today's youngsters show me some respect and call me Sir Dr. Bill! If they don't do so why... I go home and cry.

Like Marvel and Rhondajc18, it was a long time ago that those wet behind the ears started calling me sir. Now when I go to the world famous Chi Chi Club to dance up a storm, I demand they check my ID (since it is club policy). That is unless a pretty woman is at the door.
